They have quality in their name and it shows. I have not had a bad experience at this butcher. Prices are reasonable(especially for the quality) and the staff are always helpful and friendly. Just note that they close relatively early on the weekends. But they open very early!

This Mosman icon must be feeling just a little nervous with the recent opening of popular Hudson’s Meats just down the road, but it should retain a loyal clientele drawn to its ‘real butcher’ feel. Yep, if you want to know exactly where your meat’s come from, just spend a few minutes in enjoying the windows at Penny’s … Inside is a frenzy of butchers — men in white coats wielding large knives. It could be quite intimidating, but you do get the impression that they know exactly where to slit and slice. Perfect for getting just the cut you want in just the size you want — though you do pay a price for the privilege. And if you’re after an ‘authentic English pork pie’ — something only people who ARE after authentic English pork pies will understand — Penny’s have them in fine quality.

Now I should first state that I squeamish about meat. I remember holding my nose as a child as my mum chatted with the butcher and I looked on horrified, eyes bulging. So of course, I was destined to win a $ 50 voucher for Penny’s at a charity night. Friends of rave about it though, so off I headed — nose peg at the ready. It’s certainly got the personal service that my mum would have enjoyed though the cuts on offer are far better quality than we would have purchased I have no doubt. Pennys serve very high quality produce at high quality prices and they have a strong and loyal following in the community. They do sell some organic produce but they are best known for the preparation of their meats with wonderful marinades. I went for Pork Fillet with Sage and Prosciutto, Thai Coconut Chicken Skewers and Thin Beef Sausages. They sell meat that makes a good cook of anyone and this from a woman who only eats fish and chicken and yet cooks all sorts of red meat delights for my family. The fillet in particular receiving a very satisfied nod. They sell all manner of accompaniments too, though the delicious Beerenberg relishes are nearly twice the price of Harris Farm Markets up the road. Don’t get too carried away — it’s all pretty expensive.
