After walking over the bridge, my husband & I realized we needed to find someplace to eat. We had walked into Café Pompidou to use the restroom and were pointed downstairs to the Food Court. We did not want to eat there and, after asking a local for advice, ended up at Ripples — a very expensive place overlooking the water with a very limited menu. We both really liked the look of Café Pompidou, so we headed back that way to give it a try. And we were so glad we did! We ordered inside and then sat outside, where the waitress brought us our food(on nice, wood cutting boards). I went with the chicken & avocado wrap, which was nice, light & tasty. The salad was lightly dressed, but very flavorful. My husband got the Chicken Schnitzel, which was a very tasty, warm sandwich. The food was so satisfying and exactly what we wanted. The portions were a decent size — and we only paid $ 19 for 2 sandwiches, both with a salad. Not only is the service great, but the staff is very friendly and helpful. We asked for suggestions on other places in the city to eat and the waitress went back inside, asked her coworkers for their suggestions and wrote them down for us! It’s a bit off the beaten path and the location is nothing spectacular — it’s probably frequented by people who work in the area. But we enjoyed sitting outside and watching the birds.

Ever seen one of those British shows where they visit an old country manner that’s fallen into disrepair after years of neglect? Think of that but with a bit more of a modern fit out. What once was one of the lower north shore’s Crown Jewels has fallen behind quickly to it’s trendier neighbours in nearby Kirribilli and Crows Nest. To start off with, it’s just awkward. Ordering, awkward. Sitting, awkward. Service, awkward. Even cutting your toast with a blunted knife makes the whole experience awkward. The beautiful outdoor setting slightly offset by its location next to a driveway is full of rickety tables but it feels much more appealing than a table inside. It’s the food that really carries this place through, a charming all day breakfast full of classic tastes with modern twists if understandably a stand out. The coffee whilst not terrible, does not stand up well next to the amazing food. What I ate/drank: Latte(Toby’s Estate) and Eggs Benedict with smoked bone cut ham. What I rate: Service: 2⁄5 Vibe: 2⁄5 Food: 3⁄5 Overall rating: 3⁄5 Ideal for: Business lunches and a quick bite to eat if you ever find yourself on your own in Milsons Point.

Most places that serve breakfast in the Milsons Point/Kirribilli region aren’t worth a second visit — eggs a little sad, prices a little high, ambience a little lacklustre. On the contrary, Pompidou is very much worth frequenting for its carefully made coffee and delicious breakfast dishes. My last pre-work visit didn’t allow time for a hot meal(I’ll be going back to test out their Mediterranean eggs, served to the table in the pan they’re cooked in with a side of sourdough toast), but their savoury croissant, served toasted with gooey emmenthal and proper, deli-style ham hit the spot nonetheless. They also have an awesome range of pre-made sandwiches, savoury baked goods and sweet pastries to grab for your lunch break.
