Staffed entirely by knowledgeable obsessives, Thomas’ Music is THE place to go for classical recordings. Why? Well, they have a lot of stuff to sell. That’s important. If you go into a regular CD shop and ask for a nice bit of string music, you’ll be directed to their classical pops section and go home with a recording of any old group(probably some scratch orchestra) doing a metronomic interpretation of Barber’s Adagio for Strings. I shudder at the thought. Thomas’, however, will not only have so much nice string music that you’ll not know what to do, they’ll work out that you’re after Barber’s Adagio and then discuss the finer points of each recording until you find the one for you. The difference(one of them, anyway) between classical music and popular music is that it’s all in the interpretation. I own four different recordings of the Bach Cello Suites and only one copy of Queen’s Greatest Hits — there’s just no point in seeking out a «covers» album when I have the original. This idea of «options» can be overwhelming for some, so having the help when you’re faced with 20 different orchestras doing Mahler 1 is great.
