History

Established in 1960.

The Little Bookroom is the world’s oldest speciality children’s bookshop.

The Little Bookroom opened its doors to the public on Friday the 13th October, 1960, the first bookstore in Australia to stock only children’s books. It has been a Melbourne institution ever since!

The shop is named for a collection of stories by Eleanor Farjeon and illustrated by Edward Ardizzone. The cover illustration is still used as The Little Bookroom’s logo.

The Little Bookroom has moved a few times in it’s long history and is now located at 759 Nicholson St, Carlton North replete with original shelves, and has a city outpost at 5 Degraves St, Melbourne.

Business Owner

Leesa Lambert is the passionate owner and manager of The Little Bookroom. She worked for many years in the business before buying it from the previous owners in 2008.

She has a dedicated team of staff including family and friends, who are all devoted to the cause of bringing a love of literature to children.
