The Little Bookroom is truly little but opens the door to your locked imagination.
The books cater to kids but hey, we are all big kids at heart aren’t we and we love reminiscing and reliving the adventures we went on with «Possum Magic» and «Diary of a Wombat».
There is also a vast selection of authors ranging from Roald Dahl, to J.K. Rowling and John Green.
This shop is great for gifts or for your private collection and the owner is always happy to provide suggestions.
The prices are slightly higher than online bookstores but you get slightly strange yet great service.

Not only is the store filled with great stock and the location is perfect, the salesman is so funny and friendly.

Wish a place like this still existed in every city. Looking for a book or two for my daughter (8 year old), I strolled into a store and was enchanted by its display and selections. The lady in the store were very helpful, not to mention very knowledgeable. Suggested a couple books, one was author autographed. Many limited edition books and Aussie specific books that are perfect for school age children presents. I’d pay a few extra dollars for quality service like here any time over ordering books online.
Across the alley is a writer store which is also perfect for gifts such as old fashioned felt pens and seals with handmade papers and stationary.

The Little Bookroom is a lovely little black room where they sell children’s books to adults with discerning tastes. Despite being solely dedicated to children’s literature, you can see by the layout and by the dignity of the store that it’s adults who are the primary market.
This isn’t to say that there’s anything creepy in it. Far from it. The impression the store gives you of its desired clientale is that they are sensible, or even somber, adults who’ve built a little bit of space inside themselves to retain a memory of their childhoods — possibly to pass down to children of their own. And, okay, they probably do a brisk trade to people who want to seem like they’re not part of the crowd.

If you’re trekking the city with kids in tow and need a sit-​down and a caffeine hit, take them to this little bookstore that specialises in kids’ books in Degraves St. Here you can let them browse the books and pick up a story or two, then walk just metres up the street to one of the many open-​air cafes and sip a latte as they keep busy.
The Little Bookroom first opened in Melbourne in 1960 and has operated a store in Carlton for some years, just recently opening this CBD outpost. The range spans a wide age group, from picture books to early young-​adult, all displayed beautifully. In fact, that’s reason enough to take the young ones here: to show them that bookstores can be wondrous and gorgeous places to visit!

Strolling down Degraves Street there are any number of cafes, stores and boutiques to catch your eye.
Yet every time I pass The Little Bookstore I see a huddle of adults outside and someone always seems to say «that is the best bookstore!»
How can you beat reviews like that?
There are two premises: the Nicholson St store in Carlton, and the Degraves store.
While both are fabulous and have excellent staff, I love the premises in Degraves because while it is only a small store, it still manages to deliver on the quality and variety of books, fits in perfectly amongst the specialist boutique stores, and the staff are welcoming and a joy to be around.
It is a tribute to the business that adults have as much joy and excitement when inside a kid’s bookstore as the children themselves.
Small, tight, and modest The Little Bookstore is home to some classic books and comics, The Secret Garden, Asterix and Tintin are all piled high, and enormous Very Hungry Caterpillars are draped in the front window inviting you in.
Whether you are sixty or five, The Little Bookroom will transport you to fairy tales and much loved worlds, simply by stepping in and opening a book.
