3.5 stars. We went here after reading about it in an article about Melbourne’s best baos. Admittedly this was the last on our list but the only one open on the Boxing Day public holiday. Burgers were pretty decent, but we waited for ages for them to come and it wasn’t even that busy. We had the satay burger which was ace. Cheeseburger was also pretty good. Baos were just ok, the bun was a little cold, pork skin wasn’t was crispy as it should have been but rather chewy and tough. Overall Thai flavourings were quite delicious making it a pretty unique bao but didn’t really hit the mark. The ice tea was delicious but the cup was choc full of ice so we didn’t get to try much! If we lived around the corner we’d probably go back but anywhere further than a eight minute walk? Probs not.

This place has been talked about a lot. I was in town and needed something quick to eat so decided to check it out. Perhaps given all the talk and attention on social media, my expectations were too high. The place is tiny. There’s three tables out front so really this is a take out joint. The menu certainly sounds delicious so maybe I just didn’t order the best one. I got aThai chicken burger(I forget the name of it). Bun was nice and fresh but the filling was so so. A bit of lettuce, a solitary carrot slice and cucumber slice and chicken that was difficult to eat because it was all straggly pieces still joined in places and looked pink in places. Probably thigh meat and therefore fine, but a bit off putting. Like I said, maybe worth another shot, but this didn’t set my world on fire. Service not hugely friendly either.

After seeing the menu for this place I knew I had to try it out! I’ve never seen Thai inspired burgers before and the concept works pretty well. I tried the«Pou Nim» black burger which is probably one of the popular ones as it is soft shell crab with crispy apple in a black bun — very different to the average burger. I enjoyed the burger and found it quite tasty — would definitely go back again to order it. The only downside I saw was the size of the place. I don’t think I’ve seen a place smaller than this place. Definitely don’t expect to come here to sit down and eat as it is purely take out only.

So I dropped in at Thaiger after hearing about this newfangled black burger, and I’m a sucker for gimmicky food that promises to be innovative and delicious at the same time INMYMOUTH! And you know what? It was delicious. The soft shell crab black burger has a bun that’s made from bamboo charcoal(although it added no distinct flavour, it gave the burg a lot visual drama), and was accompanied by green apple and a refreshing tangy Asian salad. They also offer sweet potato or taro chips for the adventurous. Prices are a little high, especially for a place that doesn’t provide tables or a proper dining area, but then again these are no ordinary burgers…
