Let me just say upfront: This is NOT a «thrift» shop! Prices here are almost what you’d find in a department store — maybe even more. That said, Out of the Closet is super far-out funky and faddish! I picked up a pair of faded Levi’s 501’s for $ 55. There was a rack of righteous corduroy and faux fur lined coats from the 60’s/70’s that all started no less than $ 100(most in the $ 120-$ 140 range). The music was all-too-cool, as well(classic rock of the era). The neon-type posters were cool. The whole store reeked of hippiedom and the mod-set! I’ll definitely be back when I’ve got some spare bucks… :D

The thing I like most about Out of the Closet? Their t-shirts mean what they mean. Most t-shirts don’t. You buy a t-shirt with an astronaut holding a boom box, you’re probably not that keen on either astornauts OR boom boxes. But if you buy a t-shirt with a New Order album cover on, it’s probably because you like New Order(okay, or because you want to be seen as the type of person who likes New Order). That kind of principle applies to most of what OTC sells. Whether it’s good or not, whether it’s cheap or not, none of it seems to be trading on aspirational branding. These are clothes to wear or to look good in, not to show how hooked into the cultural superstructure you are. They offer a mix of vintage and new clothes, and some of it can be a little pricey, but I’d still rather this than the manufactured white noise most places seem to sell these days.

This underground vintage store has a good selection of clothes for the vintage connoisseur. Lots for both genders, there’s not much else to say about this store apart from the usual: it’s vintage, found and renewed, whacked back on the racks. The staff are nice and the clothes are good, you’re looking at about $ 20 — $ 40 for tops and skirts, about $ 40 — $ 70 for dresses and $ 90 — $ 140 for leather jackets. However! The ladies boots are all $ 50, which is great. It offers a good selection and a scarily good selection of jumpsuits(I don’t know why, but for some reason, jumpsuits look fantastic on me. Better than anything else. Which is unfortunate.) as well as dresses. It’s an absolute mainstay on Flinders St and you can pick up some killer stuff.
