This is the smallest artist-run space in Melbourne. Just inside 141 Flinders Lane in the building’s small art deco tiled foyer there are the 19 old wooden mailboxes. The wooden mailboxes are the exhibition space; illuminated from inside and their glass fronts provide a series of small display cabinets. There is a different exhibition in them every month and I have seen quite a few of them. It is always surprising the variety of exhibitions in this the limited space available: painting, sculpture, jewelery and illustrations. Some notable Australian contemporary artists have exhibited work at Mailbox 141 and in the five years that it has been operating. Mailbox 141 is not there to sell you anything just exhibit contemporary art in an usual setting.
