Definitely visit the Haigh’s in the Block Arcade — it feels almost literary in elegance. The chocolate is rich and delicious, though a little on the pricey side.

Haigh’s Chocolate is quality chocolate, however the price is not proportionate to other quality chocolate available. This Easter was the first time I didn’t give Haigh’s as gifts. I love the different theme each year at Christmas, but now it’s only purchased as a special treat. The fact that you now need to pay for silver foil bags for protecting your chocolate on top of chocolates was a bit much. For me Valrhona(France), Pacari Chocolate(Ecuador) and even Cadbury chocolate(Australia) provide quality chocolate.

If you are fortunate to stumble upon the Block Arcade in Melbourne make sure you stop by Haigh’s Chocolates. What’s not to love? Its chocolates! Haigh’s came recommended to us by a local friend. Once inside the store, there are so many choices it is almost overwhelming. You’ll also find yourself pretending to be indecisive when sampling the chocolates from staff, just so you can keep on sampling. The store is gorgeous, and the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. Haigh’s has a rich history, and thankfully, they are still around to this day, providing the public with some of the best chocolates in the world. Beautiful chocolates do come at a price, but it is money well spent. I bought 4 peppermint truffle bars and 200g of the Dark Connoisseur Selection. Let’s just say, it didn’t last two days. Thank goodness for technology, because you can order Haigh’s Chocolates online, without having to fork out a plane ticket back to Melbourne.

If you like choclate then you must come here. Be prepared to umm and ahh as you try and make your mind which samples to take with you. So many to tempt you, then again, you could always come back again.

What can be said about Haighs without me drooling on the keyboard??? For those not in the know, Haighs is a South Australian chocolate company started and still run by the Haigh family. They take great pride in their quality control and my husband and mum-in-law both say that it has changed very little from when they lived there. It is the best chocolate I have ever had in my life! Whenever I go to Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide, I am given the duty of buying(by my South Australian born husband) «supplies» from Haighs and I usually walk out with over $ 100 worth of chocolate. Haighs are expensive but are worth every cent of what you pay for. The staff are always very pleasant and helpful. It is not the sort of chocolate you can gorge yourself on. It is quite rich so you do not need a lot of it to enjoy it. The only thing that disappointed me on this visit is that they ran out of my favourite choc-caramel fudge. :(It just means that I will have to go again on my next interstate visit!

I have the dubious honour of working right across the road from the Block Arcade. Which some days is fabulous, if you need a quick gift, because who doesn’t love chocolate. On other days when my will power is ZERO this is to my detriment to my existence because this place is a must stop for any chocoholic. In the case of the 3.30ies, my ram raid is complete with a dark chocolate peppermint frog. Conveniently placed on the counter, so I walk straight in, get my fix(and usually a free sample!) and get out. Other days, when I consider purchasing a gift, I take my time and lovingly stare at the freckles and dark chocolate coffee beans. Although the freckles have not been the same since they removed the artificial neon colouring. If I’m going to have a freckle full of refined sugar, GIVEMEMYARTIFICIALCOLOURINGS! My other recommendations. Dark chocolate coffee beans. Known to get me through a work day on zero sleep. Although a «friend» may have become super, super paranoid one day when too many were consumed. That was an interesting day(apparently). Other recommends: cappuccino bars, just like a milky way. And the caramel bars. And actually everything. In peak chocolate buying times, get in early(AM) or late(PM) as the crowds are feisty and long. Actually, just go. Thank me later. And my «friend» says take it easy on the coffee beans.

I hit up Haigh’s around once a week. The chocolate is good and there is always a line of upper class old people. Love the free samples they give you with every purchase. Noms.

Belgian chocolate? Yes please! Gluten Free Options? Ahoy! Favourite picks? Choc covered macadamias, Dark choc mint frogs, Choc covered dried orange pieces, Choc covered scorched almonds Pricey? Yeah a touch but we all deserve the occasional treat right? And the chocolate is pretty damn good Location? Central, elegant and ooh la la just a little bit posh Staff? They certainly hire some lovely folks there Come back again? Can you give me a «Hell yeah!»?

My housemate raved about a chocolate shop that was almost completely gluten free(She is one of those poor unfortunate souls who cannot eat gluten). This shop is a feast in more than one way, it pleases all the senses. From the busy swans ton street shopfront you can see an assortment of chocolates in gift packages or in traditional boxed chocolates. This is the only place i buy chocolate for gifts, they suit any occasions and the staff are genuinely interested in what the gifted chocolates are for and will offer a range of sweets to suit the occasion. The chocolates are not the cheapest you will come across(But come on we are past the age of buying your mates some chocolates from woolies) but the presentation and flavour of the sweets will make it worth you’re while! Now the hardest part is giving your purchase away!

Almost every single product in Haigh’s is Gluten Free(there are sometimes one or two exceptions — the staff can tell you which). For anyone who can’t eat gluten, that’s worth five stars alone. If you CAN eat gluten, try their dark chocolate frogs, freckles or lilly pilly chocolates(like turkish delight but with lilly pilly instead of rosewater) and you’ll give it five stars anyway. Oh goodness yes. But you’ll need a leprechaun, a rabbits foot and a lot of religious paraphernalia to wedge yourself in this store anywhere near Easter or within about a fortnight of Christmas.
