I hate to say it, but I think the standards at Dinkum are slipping. I used to eat there two or three times a week, but I find myself going maybe once a month at best now. I’ll usually get a pie or sausage roll, and for the past few months they have been very dry and feel as though they have been sitting out for a long time. Also, as far as I can tell they have stopped carrying the chunky steak pie and only carry pies which use minced meat only… which is a bummer.

Do not trust the previous reviews. THISPLACEISDEFINITELYFIVE STARs. There’s only one thing in this world worth trading a kidney for… SHEPARD’S(effin’) PIE. These precious beauties are always sold in limited release; sold out usually during the lunch rush, for good reason, too — flaky crust, sauteed ground beef, onions and tomatoes, with an outer mashed potato layer. This is certainly Australia’s crown jewel. Coke is a necessity. Apply generous portions of ketchup, yes I said ketchup, for that mix of sweetness and savory — one of the best.

Perfect for those work day lunches when a salad or pieces of sushi just aint gonna cut it, Dinkum Pies offer hearty fare that every Aussie knows and holds dear to their heart including pies, sausage rolls, pasties, and bakery sweet treats, like chocolate eclairs. Essentially this is a bakery, similar to the ones that can be found in any suburban area in Australia. The beauty of course, is that this is in the city, in one of the hippest areas that caters to city workers, locals and tourists alike. It makes me glad to think that tourists trying these goods for the first time dont have to resort to luke warm 7-Eleven offerings, just because they are staying in the CBD. There is now a quality better option. My favourite? Steak and mushroom. Or maybe bacon and egg. Actually, Im partial to any with cheese in them… I guess you really cant go to wrong.

Like it’s been picked up from the outback and towed all the way into this little city laneway, Dinkum Pies is a pie shop with the lot and a cheeky Aussie grin to boot. The basic menu on the wall inside lists a whopping range of pies, from steak and bacon to chicken and mushroom and vegetarian. There’s also pasties, sausage rolls and sweets including vanilla slice and apple cake. Yes, this is a dream come true for anyone with a soft spot for good ol’ takeaway grub. I had a vegetarian pie and it was delicious — nice and flaky on top and firm pastry on the bottom, and warm and hearty in the middle, topped of course with heaps of tomato sauce. It was busy when we went but we still got a table out the front. I highly recommend this as a great city activity, especially if it’s been a while since you had a proper Aussie pie!

Dinkum Pies make fair dinkum tucker and great to eat when doing some fair drinking. If you’re a tradie in the city and looking for a real fair dinkum Aussie pie then take a little stroll to the block arcade to Dinkum Pies. If you’re a tourist and want a Dinky Di Aussie Pie look no further than Dinkum Pies. If you’re a true blue hard worker then come and get a Dinkum Pie. Dinkum Pies stay true.
