I came all the way to Sydney to see my fiancée’s home and meet her family — she had been raving about a wonderful book shop. While our trip was winding down I reminded her that we must go here to get some books for long plane ride home to the States! This place is independent in every sense of the word — it has character, personality and unique recommendations next to many books. We chatted with Helen about recommendations — her knowledge, passion and dedication to Australian authors was very genuine. She took the time to get to know my preferences and based on that made some solid recommendations. Support independent local bookshops!!!

This wee book shop is not that obvious if you’re speeding by. The older Victorian style interior is crammed to the rafters with books. I love the deep red walls — they add to the magic of this literary treasure trove. I also love the two couches squished in back to back in the second room — they invite a long stay, to indulge in the loving solitude a book can offer. Owner Helen Baxter is a character — lively, insightful, a natterer. She is direct, the community maitre d. I liked her despite the complaint that she had to work 7 days a week. I understand, in these parts I imagine owning an independent book store is tuff in these e-book and economically unstable times. The card selection is good. Helen hand picks them and I overheard her talking about creating her own range of Christmas cards using Australian artists. There’s some lovely gift books and children’s range. Visit her — the good independents are worth the love and our present buying custom so they can stay open(and, if they make enough profit, to give the likes of Helen a day off). She does gift vouchers too so you can give the gift of a luscious book scouring experience if you’re not sure what to get your bookworm giftee.

Little and charming, Blues Point Bookshop is a delightful place to visit. If I’m meeting people for coffee along Blues Point Road, I’ll be sure to leave enough time to pop in and have a stickybeak. And aside from staff who are incredibly knowledgable about the latest releases, and, well, just about anything bound between covers, the store also has lots of wonderful gift items. This is the kind of shop that makes you want really get behind independent bookstores.
