If you’re the kind of person who sees second-hand books as treasured collectables — rather than dusty has-beens — then Urchin Books will be a welcome haven. Set among the pre-loved clothes and bargain shops of Marrickville Road, Urchin Books is a place where age comes before beauty. They have a great range of genres at low prices, and they make sure all their books are in good condition. There are sizeable sci-fi and crime/thriller sections if that’s up your alley, but also plenty of music-related reads, zines, kids’ books and all the classics. The staff are really helpful too; ask them about events like poetry slams. After you’ve filled your book bag with some great literary treats, pop a few doors down to Marrickville Road Café for a cup of coffee and a flick through the pages.

In the heart of Marrickville, community bookstore Urchin Books has a terrific range of all sorts of second-hand and antique books with great sections. They do a lot of stuff with Skid Row Radio(community radio station) and Marrickville Street Festival etc but don’t assume this is your average political book store. There are sections on Sci-Fi, crime, music etc and really pretty bookmarks designed by a local artist. I’d love to see them install a little café in here, it’s the kind of shop that would make a great café/bookshop/arts hub– it has that kind of vibe anyway. They frequently do events here so all the bookshelves are on wheels. They just roll them to the side and voila, performance space for slam poetry nights and the like! Check out Urchin if you like your bookshops friendly and artsy.
