For $ 10 you get a medium plate to fill with the buffet food in the displays. Most of the food is nothing special, and a little bit on the oily side. Their soups and honey chicken are rather good. Unfortunately, their hotplates don’t keep the food hot enough, so everything gets lukewarm on your plate. Shiki is good value for the money, but don’t expect high quality.

In my hunt for the ultimate recreation of the hellfire broth I remember from living in Malaysia, Shiki Oriental’s laksa was not bad. Top marks for flavour; as someone who could drink fish sauce straight from the bottle, the potent pong of the broth satisfied. A mix of egg and rice noodles was pleasant but the egg noodles were slightly undercooked and chewy. Paying an extra two dollars for prawns and only getting two was disappointing. After dousing the bowl in chillies of both the chopped and pickled variety, I was able to get it to the level of spice I hoped for in order to kill the lurgy I have been fighting. I’d come back again but it’s still not what I’m looking for.

Not too long ago, you would never get me to eat Chinese food in a foodcourt. I’ve had way too many horrible-to-mention encounters with other places like this in foodcourts. So I had vowed never again. For me to eat Chinese in a foodcourt, I have to be starving or suffering an uncontrollable craving for Chinese food. The day I gave in, I was starving and yes, I was madly craving Chinese quick-fix. Walking past Shiki Oriental, the buffet table could not be more inviting. The brightly lit food, the variety… My mouth began to water. I piled plenty of food on my medium($ 9.90) sized plate. For the prawn crackers that wouldn’t balance atop my mountain of Chinese food, I laid them on my napkin on the tray. Yep, I’m a bit too cheap to pay for the large($ 11.90), even if my food is spilling off the plate. With any sized plate you get, you are allowed a full cup of Chicken & Sweet Corn Soup and 2 Spring Rolls. Woohoo! I took full of advantage of that. At this point… All it is, is a balancing act to get to the counter without the lady suspecting I’ve gone over board. She looked at me funny, but she must have noticed my hunger pains on my face– God, I was starving– and she let me pay for my extremely-past-the-limit medium sized plate. I ate… And I ate… And I ate. Holy crap, I finished the entire plate! In all my experience with Chinese food, this has never happened. I often feel sick a quarter of the way through, but with Shiki Oriental, I felt on top of the world. I ate my Honey Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Spring Rolls, Stir Fried Veg and Chicken & Sweet Corn soup all up. It was delicious. Best of all, I continued shopping without getting ill. Win!

Let me stat of this review by saying ‘Shiki Oriental’ is not breaking new grounds here. It is by no means the best Chinese food I have ever had nor is it the cheapest but for those days when you are craving fried rice, chicken sweet corn soup and honey chicken, heading over to their buffet section really hits the spot. And if like me, you find yourself at Indooroopilly fairly frequently, this place is pretty convenient. The buffet is not all they offer, there is also a menu that includes stir-frys and soups. As I mention earlier, the buffet at this place really hits those Chinese food cravings. For only $ 9.90 you can fill a «medium plate» and really load it with food. Included is a serve of chicken sweet corn soup to complement the buffet which includes fried rice, Mongolian beef, chicken and vegetable stir fry and honey chicken. Pretty good value if you ask me! Out of the menu, I quite like their rice noodle stir-frys, they are a bit more expensive than some of the other options at the food court but the servings are pretty big. The Chinese food at ‘Shiki Oriental’ is nothing to run home about but it is pretty good for the price(especially if you get the buffet) and is a nice alternative to burgers and your usual food court food. Whenever I am at Indooroopilly shopping centre and get Chinese food cravings, I will come here.

This place deserved a mention because it’s been around for ages. In one of the bigger corners of the food court, it has undergone some new signage in the past few years making it brighter and more attractive. Attracting me back to it. Specials are very good, but I like the Yakisoba noodles, and the Hokkien noodles too, mainly because they are pretty generous with the meat and vegetables. Can’t have enough noodles as usual, but they do give you your $ 9-$ 10 worth of value. The flavour isn’t the best there is, it’s pretty standard fare when it comes to chinese fast food… I would say it’s slightly better than the average chinese food court takeaway, but this joint has A&W Rootbeer my favourite drink stashed in their nice fridge in the back. Also has the put as much food on a plate for a price thing, where you can choose yourself. love this because it has chicken and corn soup as well as some yummy deep fried chicken wings that look like they’ve been on steroids… never seen bigger wings. Makes you wonder, but i’ll still eat them.

Sometimes after a hard days work all you really want to eat is greasy, deep-fried Chinese food. I don’t know what it is about Chinese cuisine, but it just pairs perfectly with a broken and exhausted mood. On countless occasion we’ve seen the lovelorn female lead order herself some sweet and sour pork and some fortune cookies, hoping one of the cookies would foresee a future with no more delectable yet tragic solo Chinese meals… maybe that was just ‘Two Weeks Notice’. I’m just going to let that thought go. Shiki Oriental is a handy little Chinese takeaway restaurant located in the Indooroopilly food court. What I love about Shiki Oriental(or Shiki for short) is that they’ve got great daily specials that I simply can’t resist. Today I had some sort of fried, chicken, egg, coconut rice fiasco that turned out to be rather moreish. On occasion I order from the main menu, which is always reliably delicious. Particular mention needs to be made in regard to the satay chicken, which is absolutely fantastic. Meals are relatively cheap(mostly under $ 10) and I have never heard of or experienced an upset stomach after eating here. So as they say, «it’s good to go».
