When you want icecream in Hornsby, I mean proper icecream, not frozen yoghurt(If you do want frozen yoghurt, there seem to be a large number of places that appear out of nowhere, exist for a brief moment then vanish like some strange quantum particle with a soft serve machine. Frozen yoghurt is terrible anyway. The sooner that fad is over the better), then this is the place to go. It’s good. All the basic flavours and a few less common ones as well. Not cheap though. A single scoop is $ 5 but the flavours are good and the texture is good and creamy. Their sorbet is good on a hot day or after a big serve of fish and chips. The clean lemon flavour washes the oil off the palette. Forget the new fangled frozen yogurt, what you want is good icecream.

We stopped off at Gelatissimo for dessert after our fish and chips at Harry’s Hooked and Cooked. We weren’t very hungry but ice cream beckoned and it was a warm night. Other people felt the same so it was pretty busy in there. A single scoop will set you back $ 5 in either a cone or cup. I had the passionfruit and it was a very generous scoop. The passionfruit flavour was great and it had a good acidity as well. The kids had mango which they declared delicious. None of us can remember what husband had. It’s not the cheapest ice cream you’ll find, but the quality is pretty good so I reckon it’s worth it.

I remember when Gelatissimo came on the scene in the mid 2000s and suddenly icecream was cool again(bad pun intended). The franchises seem to be everywhere now, and that’s as dangerous as it is delicious. This branch has got itself an enviously good spot by the clock fountain at Westfield Hornsby. On a hot day it beckons you from across the plaza. Or if you wander down after a movie, the neon sign glints promisingly. Yes, of course you want some gelati. Yes of course you should get a regular visitor’s card… ahem… I’ve already admitted to be a sucker for pistacchio and mint choc chip icecream, both of which Gelatissimo makes staggeringly well. I remember ordering a scoop of the latter and coming away with a stonkingly big piece of chocolate. I worried for a moment that I’d be served the garnish, but no, that was just part of the mix. Oh dear. Summer is just around the corner. I may be in serious trouble.
