There’s only one thing I hate more than the word«ugg” – an ugly term that itself stems from«ugly” – is the fact that the boots it is used to describe have somehow become a kind of fashion item. An Australian or New Zealander whose mother used to wear ugg boots while cooking tuna mornay in a ridiculous pink dressing gown knows that there is nothing fashionable about ugg boots. The things are made to be comfortable, and they are made to be worn in private instead of slippers. And yet people the world over have taken to wearing them out in public, in the middle of the day, despite the fact that they are not especially pretty. The idiocy of fashion, you know… I can’t imagine many people buying ugg boots at a beachside market stall – although, to be fair, surfers apparently use them quite a bit – but there they are, a whole wall of them, waiting to be bought. And waiting. It’s a good thing Croc Shoes stocks more than just sheepskin-lined boots. The selection is actually quite broad. But while I can imagine they do quite a bit of business when it comes to open shoes, I still can’t understand the wall of uggs. I’m just glad I haven’t seen anyone walking around the beach in them. Yet.
