Love this place. Great prices. The pies are cheap and very good! Seconding the late night feeds, dropped off here last night after a night out at around 2am.

Coeliacs, just when you thought it was safe to venture back into the suburbs, he’s back, the Golden King of Gluten, part TWO… I don’t know if there’s any official connection between Ashgrove’s Golden King bakery and Highgate Hill’s Golden King II, but there are similarities beyond the name. They both do a pretty good range of pies and some of the same sweets, but hey could be coincidence. I often go for the spinach and feta filo triangle here, but the quality fluctuates somewhat. At its best, when you get a fresh one, it’s moist and tender inside with nice flaky pastry. Sometimes it can be a little dry, as can some of the other products like sausage rolls if they’re left out too long. Weird. Their ‘pain au chocolat’(which the girl corrected to ‘chocolate croissant’ when I ordered in the French) was a little overly bready and under chocolatey the last time I tried it. The pies are satisfyingly filling, especially considering their sub-$ 3 price tag. Another good thing about GK mach II is that you can get the cab to pull over there at 3am after a night of raging and even though it’s officially outside their trading hours they’ll often sell you something freshly baked to soak up the booze sloshing around your insides. You’ll be glad of it when you wake up.
