Fresh N Wild Fish

Who thought you’d find a humble fish n chip shop at upmarket Portside?
Well, it IS a fancy looking fish n chip shop.
They have a massive shop, and most of it appears empty. There’s room for a lot of customers, fresh fish market style, although they don’t appear to have a massive range of fresh seafood to justify it.
Anyhow, I was here to eat, not take home.
There’s some tables inside and a few outside too. It was a bit nicer outside, although there’s a lot of cigarette smoke around, and you’re sitting next to parked cars.
The food? Well… here’s what we did. We chose a fish meal, it’s one piece of fish, each fish is individually priced, and the meal adds another $ 10 for chips and a salad. It’s a good sized salad and you have a choice of types. We then added on another piece of fish. This was plenty for two people. I wouldn’t get individual meals unless you’re super hungry.
The fish wasn’t bad. I got crumbed and found that the crumbing was quite hard and the fish just fell out of it.
The chips. Gosh, they’re good. Even if you just felt like some chips, they’re worth getting.
Dine in is served in cardboard trays, and the salad comes in the plastic takeaway container, but that’s okay. I guess less washing for them, and it worked well enough. I hope they were at least recycled cardboard.

I’m not one to eat a lot of battered and fried food but when I do it’s nice to eat something this wonderful. I really enjoyed the fried shrimp and scallops.
Very glad I stopped here. A fantastic taste of the fresh seafood Brisbane has to offer.

I think you’ve probably all realised I review lots of fish and chips places… I didn’t realise until now, but good fish and chips is super rare and makes me super happy. I’m not going to rant and rant about this place, but GO HERE. It’s amazing. The staff are friendly, the food is perfect, the produce is fresh, everything is cooked to a golden brown perfection… just go here. You can buy fresh seafood here too :) It’s amazing here, it’s my new favourite place. Beats them all!

Fresh n Wild Fish. Perfect Location.
All the fish products seemed really fresh and they do have a huge selection of fish. I ordered a simple grilled snapper with a greek salad., but I wasn’t impressed at all. The snapper was overcooked, dry and chewy and the salad was only a handful. How can you justify $ 9 for a handful of salad???
We also had the prawn bucket and yes it was fresh, but not better quality than any other good fish n chips place.

I normally go all the way to Birkdale for good fish and chips but thought I would give this one a try.
Fish was nice and fresh and the batter was not too greasy or heavy. Quite reasonably priced for what you get and the selection of fresh seafood was almost as good as my regular fishmonger (I’m biased there!).
Definitely worth giving it a try if you are at Portside.

Considering its location and the rent they would be paying, I found this place great value for money. The meals are really good with good variety and all at a reasonable price. I would be happy paying a little bit more than what they currently charge, but don’t tell them that!
They maintain their «fish & chip» shop appeal without being too classy in Hamilton, but it is one step up from the local. I love this place. My mum introduced me to this place about a year ago and now that I live on the other side of town, I still drive over for a nice fish meal all the time.
Definitely rate this place for food, value and location.

This is not your normal fish and chip shop. I would go so far as to say that the seafood here is fresher than the offerings of some five star seafood restaurants. Therefore I have no problems paying a premium price for their seafood.
I first started going here when Portside ran a $ 25 movie and meal deal. Well, unfortunately the deal has long past but I still come out especially for Fresh N Wild Fish.
Usually, I order the $ 25 cold seafood platter for one. It comes with oysters, bugs, prawns, marinated octopus and a prawn/​avocado salad. Alternatively, I’ve had some pretty interesting grilled fish in Thai sauce from their specials menu. Even though they’re primarily a fishmonger, I’m impressed with the tastiness of their sauces and cooked meals. Alright, rolling anything in batter and dropping it in a deep fryer would make it tasty but their chips are pretty special.
Fresh n Wild Fish is best served with a movie at Dendy’s on a Sunday afternoon on a Friday evening.

Fresh n Wild is… well, fresh and wild! On a Sunday afternoon I love chillaxing at Portside with a dozen fresh Pacific Oysters and a bucket of prawns — mmm… the perfect finale to a walk along the boardwalk…
If you are not into cold seafood they also have a huge variety of hot seafood available, crumbed fish, prawn cutlets and hot crispy chippies. You can also buy your seafood here, take it home and cook it yourself.
Prices are a little high but immeasurable to the quality of the seafood. The oysters taste like the sea, the fish is shiny and smells fresh and clean, the prawns are big and juicy, full of flavour. A bottle shop is conveniently located nearby (in the same complex) so the next time you are at Portside grab a dozen oysters and a good bottle of white wine and bon appetite.

I had a client meeting here, at the fancy Portside Wharf, and had a craving for fish and chips. Boy was I surprised when I bit into my fish and it was not only freshly crisp, it was juicy and the freshest fish I’d ever tasted in a long time. Straight from the wharf I guess! It was the barramundi and it was barra-​terrific-​mundi! Beer battered chips were melting in my mouth too.
So the place is a bit pricey and it doubles as a seafood market selling very fresh smelling fish and seafood. It’s very popular and deservedly so. So there is nothing different and new here, but extremely fresh seafood, you definetely haven’t tasted a fish as fresh as the fish in fresh n wild.
They cater to a lot of business people and casual movie-​goers, if casual movie-​goers visit portside wharf. Tres trendy and tres good. This place is definetely your fish and chip shop in Hamilton if you’re ever in the area.
