Jones of Guildford

Nice and relaxing atmosphere, no pressure to buy, lots of lovely delicious antiques for everyone’s appetite. One place I will be frequenting.

Maybe this place would have gotten four stars if I had have walked the other direction and up the street, so that I would have visited this place first rather than almost last of the number of antique stores I visited that day.
It was cute walking in to see the old man and woman behind the counter drinking tea out of antique cups and saucers.
The first room is full of glass cabinets displaying curios, utensils and crockery through the ages. I liked their selection of shoe polish tins, but everything I saw I had basically seen before at the other stores (except for a Wall-​e toy which for some reason was there).
The next room however is full of antique furniture which is quite lovely, old records which are mainly comprised of Christmas songs and the most beautiful old cash register.

The first time I came to Jones of Guildford was to find a vintage English pram for a Television Commercial — and trust me this was not an easy task! Fortunately they had a stunning vintage Silver Cross pram (the only one I’ve seen in Perth) and exactly what I needed, it was a little shabby but nothing unworkable and it was terribly reasonable.
Amid all the vintage and antique shops on James Street I think Jones of Guildford really have made an effort to merchandise their treasures the best they can and have the biggest selection of products available. Having a small section dedicated to old records, then an entire floor full of old chairs, small dark wooden cabinets, drawers, and shelves and meshed between the furniture they even a spectacular grandfather clock, that I wish I could have.
In the adjacent room are the smaller artefacts with shelves filled with old books, glass cabinets displaying the most darling and dainty English floral tea sets, large bowls filled with stunning detailed canes that my great uncle would adore, beautiful glassware and homewares. Although there is a lot of stuff in here, everything is neatly displayed and easy to get to, but if you’re really after something special you will have to be in here for a few hours to carefully examine every inch of this place so that you don’t miss anything.

Looking around this shop is like poking around the attic of a hundred-​year-​old house, packed with the detritus of several generations’ inhabitation. You never know what you’re going to find, but whatever it is, it’s going to be interesting. I love finding unusual old objects to dot around my home, so to me this is a goldmine. One room is full of antique furniture and larger items, whilst the other room is full of cabinets and cabinets of bric-​à-​brac and trinkets. Every inch of spare wall space is covered with curios, and there are boxes full of books, records and sheet music filling all the spaces in between. Go and have a look — this shop is wonderful!
