love going to this place for chips after chilling at chalkers!

This shop would have to do the best fish an chips I have had in a LONG time. I have been here twice in the last two weeks. Fish and chips at the bay can be a bit hit and miss, but this place, in my opinion, is the best by far. Their chips are fabulous, and everything else we have had from there is great too. If you are at the bay and looking for somewhere to eat from, I strongly recommend Bay Fish Shop.

I have been here on couple of occasions while in Glenelg… The shop always seems to have plenty of customers inside. The menu includes everything you could want from a fish and chip shop even including burgers, hotdogs and schnitzel packs. When you enter you have to order at the far end which can be a squeeze to get to if its busy. The prices are ok… a little higher than some places i have been… but it is in Glenelg — a popular tourist area. The food… on the different times i’ve been here the fish has always been excellent quality and well battered/cooked/fried and looked nice. However the chips i have had have on one occasion been great and the other 2⁄3 times very greasy and could hardly taste any potato… even to the point that when you bite it you get a lot burst out. I will obviously visit again and monitor the quality!

My boyfriend pointed this shop out to me as the best along the strip. High praise. What else can be done but try it out? A very popular place, we expected a bit of wait, however we were in and out within 10 minutes, which was great. We ordered the daily special of two small fish + chips for $ 7.95. When we looked at the inside board and realised that this is the same as the Junior Special, we got worried. However, we’d just shared a yiros so weren’t feeling too hungry. Good thing that, because the special is more than enough for one. And it is GOOD. I do love my fish and chips, and one of my greatest joys in the world is sitting outside, devouring freshly cooked F&C. He wasn’t wrong about the quality. The chips are fantastic — just perfectly crispy and crunchy, while fluffy on the inside, with plenty of salt yet not too greasy, which was a surprise. The fish — oh baby — delicious. Battering makes or breaks a piece of fish. The Bay Fish Shop battering is golden and oh so crispy. The fish inside falls apart and still tastes like the sea. You know it came from their fresh stock in the window, which makes it taste all the better. The only drawback here is the price of the normal hot food packs, which start at around $ 14. You can have packs for one or two people, with just prawn, calamari, scallop, fish or the whole fisherman’s pack. However, the Junior Special is more than enough. They also do burgers and yiros, but who doesn’t get fish at a fish and chip shop? Especially when it’s so good!

This shop is always full to the gills on a sun-drenched day or balmy eve. Expect a line. However, don’t make the mistake of waiting aimlessly to be served, head to the unexpressive guy up the back to place your order. Next take your ticket and put your listening ears on while you wait to hear your number called. The fish is lovely, it does taste fresh which is refreshing. Even if the sea is only 50 metres away you can’t be guaranteed such logical links these days. I’m usually a whiting girl but here it’s battered butterfish all the way. The hot chippies are possibly ‘healthier’ than some but that’s their problem. If I’m indulging in deep fried food gimme all the salt and fat you can muster otherwise what’s the point? Thank God for small mercies as without my tub of tartare they would’ve been rendered inedible on the basis of dryness. I think it’s a bit pricey but then part of me’s still stuck in an idyllic past where $ 2 of chips would feed a small village. Make sure you take your treasures and sit on the foreshore picnic style for one of the greatest pleasures in life, fish and chips at the beach on a warm day. In a nutshell — Live in the moment!

The Bay Fish shop has been around for many years. In summer people line up for great fish and chips to take down to the beach for tea. The shop isn’t anything swish and hasn’t had a refurb for quite sometime(maybe never) but it is worth the visit if you are craving fried food. I don’t often buy the cooked take away food here but I am always here buying their fresh fish. For a seaside tourist destination Glenelg lacks fresh fish shops, having tried the few there are, I keep coming back here because it has the freshest fare available. There isn’t much of a selection but what they have is quality. This is also the fish they use to deep fry so you can’t lose.
