While I appreciate a sidewalk full of beautiful flowers, exotic birds chirping in the window, and an eccentric shopkeeper this is not enough to make me forget that I paid $ 100 for two bouquets worth of flowers over Christmas. And this without purchasing the $ 40 worth of local eucalyptus I fell in love with and declined to purchase. This shops is flat out overpriced for their flowers and I haven’t even dared check on what they charge for the small grocery items in the back. I only go here if I really need to impress someone coming over for dinner and am in a rush.

I love that I have to pass by this store every time I leave my house. It always seems to be overflowing with the brightest flowers, plants, and green herbs in Glebe. This little convenient store is like a miniature garden oasis on Glebe Point Rd. One time, I even saw several tiny Rainbow Lorikeets playing around in the store’s entrance, chirping, and sometimes even interacting with some of the customers. It was such an endearing sight. Talking with the kind proprietor, I learned that these little birds are regulars to the shop, and sometimes cockatoos drop by to say hi. With an impressive variety of flowers that embellish the entrance, this General Store is well maintained and very local. The scents wafting from the flowers never fail to captivate, as if that they are begging me to take them home. Unfortunately, I don’t buy flowers as often as I’d like. More than just a florist, the interior of the shop is clean and well organized, carrying myriad essentials.

Glebe has the General Store to thank for splashing its often unruly streets with a little color. Take a stroll down Glebe Point Road toward Backwattle Bay on a sunny afternoon and stop here to flower gaze and perhaps pick up a refreshment. I am usually on the lookout for sunflowers. Upon enquiring, the friendly owner told me to expect nice large sunflowers within the next couple months. In the meantime, I can make due with the vibrant gerberas or angelic lilies all for sale by the stem. If you’re after greenery of the kitchen variety, you can also pick up some potted basil or mint from the General Store. This flower shop meets convenience store is whimsical at best, if not a tad schizophrenic. But hey, aren’t things more interesting that way?
