the beef burger is so good!the meat is really juicy. The chips are crisp outside and soft inside, and the fish is tender.

Cheap, fast and fresh! Fish & chips is always awesome here, they do battered, crumbed or grilled! And for a bit extra. you can choose the type of fish you prefer. The Barramundi is always delish! Salt & Pepper squid very tasty! Go for the Grilled seafood platter or Atlantic salmon with salad for something on the healthier side. You can opt for Greek salad too if you’re not a fan of Garden salad. The Glebe burger is also delicious, patty is well seasoned with good minced beef in it and I like that the greens they use are the mixed leaf type. Overall it is an excellent fish & chips place that does good fresh food for a very reasonable price.

This place is brilliant for a quick and cheap feed. I can vouch for the fact that they do a great grilled fish burger(for less than $ 7!). The staff are very laid back and were happy for us to eat in and bring over a few BYO beers from the pub across the street. Win!

I was looking for a new fish-n-chips place and chose Fish on Fire strictly by the reviews on Unilocal.I was happy with choosing to have lunch here, and enjoyed a nice meal. I ordered the standard fish and chips that came with a decent side salad. The fish was good, and it tasted fresh. It was nothing extraordinary, just good basic fish-n-chips. I would eat here again, but am still searching for the ultimate Aussie fish-n-chips experience & meal. We found street parking right in front of the restaurant, and had a peaceful walk around the park right across the street after lunch. I’d recommend Fish on Fire to anyone.

Gah! It is with a heavy heart that I write this less-than-favorable review of what must have once been good fish and chips. After seeing all of the other positive reviews, we settled in for a dine-in meal. I got the bog standard fish and chips, and BF got the grilled seafood platter. We also ordered a potato scallop, which for you Yanks is like a batter dipped and fried potato slice– naughty, crispy, and delicious– normally, worth every calorie. Not this time. My fish tasted fishy. Like old fishy. Like let’s take old fish and resell it as fish and chips old fishy. In addition to being overcooked inside, the fish fillet was underdone on the outside, with the batter being soggy and overly chewy and not crispy at all. How does tht even happen? SO disappointed. The potato scallop was even worse– the inside was almost raw, and the outside mushy. Classic sign of frying oil not being hot enough, but them not caring and frying your food anyway. Those potato scallops are pre-prepared(they are in the display case for all to see), and it didn’t seem to look any different than when it was in the case and then on our plates. There is no excuse for them to not take the extra time to ensure the scallop is golden and crispy, so hot from the fryer that you burn your tongue in excitement. Um, not that I’ve ever done that. Someone else I know has. As for BF’s dish, he felt everything was overcooked, from the prawns to the perch to the calamari. The only saving grace of our meals were the chips, which were freshly fried, golden crispy and yummy. So they get one star. But there is no excuse for old, soggy, overcooked fish at a FISH shop. Get it together Fish on Fire!

If you’re on a budget, being peckish on a Sunday afternoon in Glebe can be anything but enjoyable. Thankfully there’s Fish on Fire, a takeaway food joint serving by far the cheapest finger food around! $ 5 will score you a veggie burger, and $ 5.50 scored me a fish burger; a nice sized grilled fillet of fish sandwiched between two toasted sesame buns and layered with salad and tartar sauce. No, it wasn’t a «ground-breaking, earth shattering» burger, but for only $ 5.50 you really can’t beat it! If you want to sit, there’s seating inside as well as a few tables outside, or just across the street is a lovely park and who doesn’t love trees with their tartar? Glebe may have it’s fair share of cute and cozy restaurants, but for this Newtown gal, cheap takeaway definitely lacks here. Glebe could use more places like this; this baby sure did light my fire.

As a student who has only been here for 2 weeks, I stumbled upon Fish On Fire through google-ing and Unilocaling cheap but good food. The prices are definitely affordable for students(there are under $ 10 options that are good portions). I got a Barramundi burger(crumb) w/chips and a soda(in a can) for $ 12.20. The burger was sooo goood… fried but not to the point where you feel like you’re having a heart attack. And the chips/fries are good. The girl who ran up our order was friendly too: ] I wouldn’t say this place is the best thing i’ve ever eaten but it’s better than that b/c it’s one of those«it’s so good and affordable and i like the atmosphere that i’ll come eat here a lot.»

Man, the fish here is really on fire! This place has a reputation for having some of the best fish and chips in the city. It’s funny, because when I tell people that I live in Glebe, they automatically bring up Fish On Fire as if it’s synonymous with the suburb. It took me a couple of months to actually stop here, though I did notice the crowds every time I would pass by. Now I understand what everyone is talking about when they laud this place for their seafood. The menu isn’t just fish and chips, but there’s also tempura prawns, calamari, and a bunch of grilled fish. If you’re on a diet, better grab the latter. I assure you that it will be fresh. But the shining platter really is the fish and chips. The chips excellently fried, and were so crispy, it almost seemed like they were breaded. The fish was also lightly breaded and fried golden. My only gripe about this place is that tartar sauce is not gratuitous, neither is ketchup. Other than that, I can’t complain about the price.

When it comes to Fish on Fire, I don’t know why I dragged my feet for so long. I had two credible Glebe-local friends who swear by the place. I heard it was cheap, I heard the portions were great, I heard it was delicious. So just the other night, I finally tried out that famous fiery fish. I squeaked in just before they were closing and luckily I was permitted to order take away. i asked the cashier which fish was freshest. He pointed to the snapper special– fillet of fish, salad and chips for $ 15.50. It was one of the more expensive meal options available, but I took it anyway. They moved pretty quick getting the fish grilled and chips fried. When ready, I carried myself and my plastic take away bag on home in great anticipation. Opening the box I was immediately satisfied with the portion. The fillet was huge and could have easily fed two people my size(or me for dinner and me again for lunch the next day). I found the fish to be incredibly fresh and well seasoned. I was glad I chose to get it grilled and not fried so the flavours could pop. The chips were deliciously crispy and lightly salted. Possibly even hand cut? In total, my meal was great. I will definitely be going back to Fish on Fire soon.

Fish on Fire is my go to place for fish and chips in Glebe. Others have come and gone but failed to do what Fish on Fire does so successfully: produce quality product with undeniable freshness for minimum cost. I always end up getting the same things on rotation here, either the Salt and Pepper Squid($ 7) or Tempura Prawn($ 10). The Salt and Pepper Squid is scored, lightly crumbed and served on a small bed of greens(read: a little lettuce and a bit of shaved carrot). You get 6 decent sized squid. The Tempura Prawn(serving of five) is lightly battered and served with chips. Both come with sweet chilli sauce, although I never use it. Neither option drips with excess oil like regular take away fish and chip joints, but I still wouldn’t hesitate to add a side of Greek Salad($ 4.50) to help prolong a self-induced heart attack(although it is nothing you can’t whip up yourself at home). A special shout out goes to the beer battered chips, with the right amount of crunch and smooth, fluffy inside. Paired with some of the best chicken salt in Sydney, it is hard to go wrong.

When we first moved to Glebe, a friend said«You’re lucky. Glebe has the best fish & chips in Sydney.» Having grown up two hours away from the sea, I was sceptical. «Wouldn’t the best seafood be closer to the water?» I asked, something that had been drilled into me from years of trips to the coast as a kid. But, with a knowing wink(not unlike Santa as he shoots up the chimney), my friend arranged to take me there the following week. After a quick beer at the AB Hotel, we popped across the road to Fish On Fire and ordered a couple of fish and chips with some calamari to dine in. While we waited for our food, a steady stream of Glebe-ers lined up for their food, greeted by name by the brothers calling the shots. The grilled fish was cooked perfectly, the calamari was delicious and the chips were a cut above the rest — beer battered, thick and crunchy, and easily the best I’d had in forever. That fateful day spurred on a weekly Fish On Fire ritual(which usually involved taking our food to the park across the road) that continued even once I’d moved suburbs. If you’re a Glebe local, you’d know by now that Fish On Fire never disappoints. If you’re not a local, make the journey — I still do.
