Once I went to Sushi with Goods to have lunch as I often do, and for my surprise the doors were shut and a sign on the window said«Sorry, due to health issue we won’t be opening today». This tells you exactly how family owned and ran this lunch bar is. Simply a pearl within Fremantle. I love being greeted and assisted by such a lovely Japanese family. It is one of my favourite lunch spots and always provides me with a great meal. The katsu chicken ramen is my favourite, but there is a selection of good things to try.

I have somehow managed to return here 5 times in the last 5 weeks! The trick? Order freshly made sushi! You won’t be disappointed and it is very very cheap. The spicy raw tuna is delicious and you will get miso soup with it. Yum

As per my profile, I have a soft spot for sushi and I do appreciate the best when I get it. Sushi for goons is just another run-of-the-mill sushi store that there seems to be an abundance of in Perth. I’m not saying it’s bad, the sushi is fine, some are a little dry, others are delicious, and all up you are left with the same old flavour of ‘sushi’ in your mouth that I can get from the one just around the corner from my house. The store is cute though, and the owners are very friendly and happy to accommodate, the kid that comes in with the owners(he’s about 4) is absolutely hilarious to watch too. So I guess it has a little character than your average sushi store. I should add that the prices are about $ 1-$ 2 cheaper than most places.

Sushi With Goons has long amused me with its ridiculous name, but it was only the other day that I finally sampled its culinary offerings. It says on the window that it is The Best Sushi in the West. Well, I beg to differ. It’s really not that great. I popped in for a takeaway lunch and went for a combo box, as I can never decide what to get, and I was horrified(perhaps that’s a bit of an exaggeration) to find that there was not a single piece of salmon in there. It was mainly chicken and tuna — the worst ones! Maybe I should have looked more closely at what was in there. Maybe it was just a bad choice. But it was also fairly dry and tasteless. I tried to combat the tastelessness by adding plenty of pickled ginger, but even the ginger, one of the strongest tasting things ever, was tasteless. Gah! Sorry, Sushi With Goons, but next time I’m going elsewhere for my sushi fix.

I’ve been to this litlte sushi joint three times when on those morning-after-the-night-before Sunday expeditions to Freo. But it was only on my third visit that I realised what a cool name it had on its signage. Sushi With Goons. I bet the owners have no idea what it literally means. Heck, I’m still trying to work it out… Name aside, the raw fish here is superb. I’ve tried the california roll, the tuna with avocado, the deluxe smoked salmon roll, and — my favourite — the simple, clean squid salad. The sushi and salads here are always freshly prepared, and the price very friendly, starting at $ 3.00(for a five-pack of vegetable rolls).
