With a sweet tooth like mine, it is nearly impossible to walk past the window of Sara’s Lolly Shop window and not give in to temptation. The bright colours draw your eye and then you notice the jars of lollies in the window. There is no mass producted lollies or chocolates in store. They are old school and handmade. Giant freckles, rocky road, humbugs. The saying of like a kid in a candy store, applies to myself. It is hard to narrow down your choices in this place. Get an old schooled bag of mixed lollies so you can enjoy them all.

Ooh how pretty this window looks. The glass is wall to wall filled with jars of colourful sweets, liqourice twists and nougat bars. It screams out across the laneway ‘come in, come in’. Once you get in it screams again, this time in a cacophany of voices and whispers ‘buy me, eat me, buy me, eat me, I am delicious’. Now I have always been a good girl and do as I am told so it was inevitable that I would get a few bags of apple sours and chocolate satins. This shop has it all, from childhood memories to tasty modern treats to locally made gourmet chocolates and novelty candies. It is very hard not to me impressed with the layout of this place, a lot of thought and effort has gone in to presenting these delicously sweet items in such a way as they look more inviting. Yum

Sara’s Lolly Shop is a candy lover’s paradise. Many’s the time I’ve been in and seen grown men and women going into raptures over the countless classic sweets on the shelves, squealing like little children and jumping up and down. I don’t blame them — I do the same myself. As if the shop wasn’t sweet enough already, all the shelves are painted pink, making you feel like you’re inside a giant strawberry bon bon. Yay!

This is the kind of candy store Willy Wonka would have loved to have seen his products in. But you’ll be hard-pressed to find any commercial brands in Sara’s Lolly Shop. In fact, most of the lollies look home-made with jars and jars and jars of all manner of pretty-looking confectionary. From bon-bons to sweet slogan hearts, giant freckles to rocky road, I don’t think there’s a classic missing on these shelves. I love the way the place is unabashedly painted in fluoro pink and rainbow hues, too, as if the candy itself wasn’t bright welcome enough in this otherwise shabby corner of Fremantle. Please, sir, can I have some more?

Me and my father have a strange bond over our love of confectionary. We go fairly bananas over Sara’s Lolly Shop, and once you take a peak inside you’ll understand why my Dad put on 10kgs when he moved to Perth. Sara’s Lolly Shop is the kind of classic candy store that gets you all nostalgic about a world before certain retailers claimed a monopoly on the colour purple and took over from hand-made confectioners. The store is bright pink, decked out with shabby chick shelves and chests of drawers to display an assortment of sweet things for those who’ve entered. You’ve got jars of strawberries and cream, coke bottles, bubble gum clouds, chocolate bon-bons, liquorice all-sorts, musk sticks, those funky edible bracelets you used to love in primary school, giant smarties, even bigger freckles, reese’s peanut butter cups, humbugs, gluten free honeycomb, sugar-free sweets for the weight conscious, and best of all — MELODYPOPS! This store stocks everything you’d need to fill a lolly bag and serves as my personal dispensary in times of Epic PMS. An absolute must for those with a sweet tooth.
