Paying $ 6 for a tea has never tasted so good. And there’s never been a tea I’ve been more willing to pay that money for. There’s no tea bag in a pot of hot water leading to mouthfuls of disappointment at this new tea house that has opened within Scrumptious Reads on James Street. Sinmei Tea, with tea houses in Hong Kong and Shanghai, has opened in Brisbane with her range of hand-selected teas, matcha cakes and all-day brunch. While there’s no eggs benny on this brunch menu there is the Hakka Thunder Tea Bowl — a well balanced mix of egg, tofu a matcha pesto and green tea. I stopped in during the soft launch opening and enjoyed a slice of the Earl Gray angel cake which may well be what eating«air» would be like. This soft and delicate cake is well paired with a cup of fresh brewed tea. While it stands on its own it also doesn’t detract from the intricacies of the tea’s flavour. The tea I opted for wasn’t traditional but came highly recommended from SinMei herself. The Hojicha Hot Chocolate combines roasted tea, milk chocolate, soy milk and marshmallows for a decadent hot chocolate that won’t leave you feeling as though you ought to have popped a lacteeze before sipping. Not at all sweet it was a great afternoon pick-me up with the flavour of the roasted tea a delicious mix with the chocolate and soy milk. If an afternoon or morning spent surrounded by books with a true cup of tea tickles your fancy, then I’d suggest you pencil in a date with SinMei Tea pronto. (Note: This is totally a 5 star experience but I want to hold out on that star until I’ve gone back to try the Hakka Thunder Bowl for lunch).
