We stumbled upon Fresh Fish Co out of sheer hunger and exhaustion after a 12 hour work day– pleasantly surprised that it is open for dinner and that we could find parking right in front. We ordered the staples– sashimi, tempura — both of which were delectable. I am a Salmon snob and I will say the sashimi is the best that I have had in Brisbane– like butter! We also ordered a fish co soup which was delicious. Everything was very fresh and the cooking demonstrations on the TVs provided some paella inspiration:) A bit pricy, but good value for $$

Simple and delicious counter-service sushi restaurant and fish market. I highly recommend the sashimi salad, which is a perfect combination of fresh greens, a sesame vinaigrette, salmon, tuna, and king fish for $ 24. I also buy fish here frequently. Most of what they sell is sashimi-quality, meaning if you handle it carefully and use it quickly, you can cook it as little as you like. So, taking some tuna home to sear for dinner is an option.

I’ve been craving sashimi for the longest time now, so with my newfound time, I decided to walk around James Street(which reminds me so much of College Avenue in Berkeley). I was hesitant to try out Fresh Sushi Co. because I am quite critical about Japanese food, especially when it comes to raw fish, but I decided that the displays looked fresh and it looked popular enough to give it a go. I ordered the Half Sushi Moriawashi, at plate of five nigiri and an ikura battleship. The sashimi was fresh, for the most part, though the shrimp gave me a slight reaction, which doesn’t usually happen with the freshest of fish and seafood. I was a bit dismayed, but overall, the fish were fresh, and the ginger was tender and not sinewy(«old» — as they say). The price isn’t cheap for a fast food-like setting, as their chirashi is 33AUD for a bowl, but it looks like it would be super delicious! Alas, I will wait until I visit home…

Fresh Fish Co. is typical of many of the businesses around James Street in that it’s well run, expensive, and stocks an upmarket range of products. In other words, it’s a bit fancy pants. This said, I think seafood is one of those things that you want to buy from somewhere you know is high quality. Fresh Fish Co. certainly seems like a well thought out, efficiently run fish market, with plenty of fresh fish and shellfish on display in the counters. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Go to their website for some great recipes to use with your freshly bought seafood.

The Fresh Fish Co is what fish shops should be like. Fresh really is the key word here and even I(who usually struggles with the stinkiness of seafood markets) can appreciate how good everything looks here. The place doesn’t even make me wanna spew from the stench. The smell is mild and mainly smells of ice which I think points to how fresh, clean, and hygienic everything is here. I notice a lot of the staff are Japanese and we all know that the Japanese are experts in the art of fresh seafood so I take that as an encouraging sign. I’m not a big seafood eater, but my family loves seafood and after having tried numerous fishmongers and seafood markets have been getting their fishy fixes from the Fresh Fish Co for years now. I think it’s a clever touch that they’ve integrated a sushi bar at one end of the counter where you can order sushi and sashimi either from the cabinet or custom-made to what you fancy. The fact that people are happy to sit in here at the high wooden benches and eat their lunch just goes to show you how inoffensive the smell is here. There’s nothing fishy about this place!

Fresh Fish Co are fabulous and they know it. Situated at the back of the James St Market complex, they have a fishmonger’s counter and also a sushi bar. The fishmongers at Fresh Fish Co know their stuff. They know they are likely to welcome clientele from the swanky surrounds of New Farm and Teneriffe and they are ready for the challenge. Selling everything from lobster to perch, they offer sound advice for aspiring Masterchefs and the range is always excellent, unless you pop in right at the end of the day. The sushi counter is more expensive than other sushi outlets around town, but the sashimi is so fresh and ridiculously luscious. I like eating there purely for the atmosphere and décor — it’s industrial and urban with clean lines and smart counters. I absolutely adore seafood and recommend any other marine aficionados to check out Fresh Fish Co.

When you first walk into Fresh Fish Co, you are hit with the smell of absolutely nothing — which is exactly what fresh seafood should smell like. This is what a chef from the James St Cooking School told me once. Asides from not smelling fishy, fresh fish should also have clear, bright eyes, the scales should be shiny and the gills red. The seafood products at Fresh Fish Co. is certainly all that and more. There is also a sushi bar connected to Fresh Fish Co. It’s pricey but the sashimi is unbeatable(no surprises given the quality of their seafood). This is the place to go to order oysters, crabs, bugs and prawns for Christmas. Use their express service form to beat the Christmas queues and arrange a stress free pick up on the 24th of December. Occasionally you can sample their freshly shucked oysters– delicious morsels tasting of fresh salty water and oyster-y goodness.
