I love book stores. I am the Imelda Marcos of Books. The idea of cheap second hand books is exciting. Book stores in Perth have a lot of competition with the big guns on the internet, as seen with the disapperance of Angus & Robertson and Borders. This secondhand bookstore was disappointing. There was a sullen moody teenager behind the counter. The range was very heavy on the romance books. Pretty average really. But you many find a rare great buy.

Perth, as I have written elsewhere here on Unilocal,is obsessed with chain stores. Even stores that don’t look like chain stores turn out to be chain stores. Perth isn’t interested in having anything that it can’t have more than one of. I like Pulp Fiction Book Exchange at Whitfords City Westfield a lot. I was grossly disappointed to find that it, too, has its doppelgängers around the place. I was even more grossly disappointed to find that its Floreat doppelgänger is actually a little dull by comparison. It has a halfway decent selection – and, weirdly, another copy of Roberto Bolaño’s 2066 in near-perfect condition – but that’s partly the problem: it’s only halfway decent. Or maybe my opinion has been coloured by the goddamned chain thing.
