Melbourne Chess Club offers people a place where they can play chess in a competitive and/​or social environment. We run tournaments every single Saturday afternoon and most Monday evenings as well as other specific one day and weekend events. The clubrooms are open every day of the year for social chess. Come in and have a friendly game! Membership is $ 170 per year ($ 120 concession) for adults and $ 70 per year for children (under 18 years of age). Membership allows you to play at the club every single day of the year if you wish and gets you a discount in tournament entry fees and bookshop merchandice.

History

Established in 1866.

The Melbourne Chess Club has been open since 1866 and is the oldest chess club in the Southern Hemisphere! The clubrooms in Fitzroy were purchased in the early 1990s.

My name is Grant Szuveges and I since 2009 I have been president of the Melbourne Chess Club. I have been a member of the club for over 20 years and am an internationally titled chess player (a FIDE Master). Since taking on the top job at MCC the club has modernized and Im very proud to have increased membership numbers from 70 in 2008 to 150+ in each of 2009 – 2012! I will be stepping down as president in 2014 however to allow a new president (Paul) the opportunity to implement his ideas to ensure that the club continues to move forward in the right direction!

Im also a new but avid «Yelper» and have reviewed quite a few places including restaurants, cafes, zoos etc. Have a read of my reviews!
