My curry expectations are no doubt, pretty high(as a Malaysian) — okay, I see some sort of a trend going right now, I seem to be doing a curry hunt, kinda. See, I often need my curry-fix, at least once a week. And it is so hard for me to find a place that serves Indian food with the exact amount of spice, taste, and spicy-ness. We ordered Lamb Vindaloo(YUM!!! Even though I bit on a chili that gave me that extra kick in the mouth), Saag Paneer(love the cheese in it), and Garlic Naan(gotta love me some Garlic Naan; extra points if it’s Garlic Cheese Naan!). Don’t be fooled by the looks of the portions. They might be in a physically small(or looks like one) bowl, but it’s quite a lot — we ended up packing our Lamb Vindaloo home(more curry for tomorrow!). This is my first time at Fitz Curry Café, and I can definitely say I will be back again. Staff is lovely; they seem quite busy with the takeaways too(that’s another option for those lazy nights at home). If you are looking for an Indian place to dine in Fitzroy, give them a go. I shall dream of some Garlic Naan tonight … Mmmm…

The food here is consistent. It’s good, reasonably priced, open late and on public holidays and the staff are friendly. It isn’t the best Indian I have had but it definitely serves its purpose.

The butter chicken was too sweet! The more I ate it, the less I liked it. The chicken was good, though. The lamb biryani was ok, but not as good as other biryanis I’ve had. I didn’t really like that, either. Service was good. Overall, I was a bit disappointed.

Ok so the food at the Currry Café is pretty good. But I have to say that I have never returned after they served up a plate of rice for our table of 7 large enough to feed three. We asked for another two plates so everyone had enough rice for the many many curries we had ordered, only to find that we were charged $ 78.75 for rice on the bill! This means we were each charged $ 11.25 for rice alone. I am sorry but that is not cool. I managed to bargain it down to $ 7 each, which is still outrageous if you ask me. To be fair I hadn’t had that problem when I went with just one other person to dine previously. And they now claim to serve organic food, which in reality means they use organic flour in their flat breads and nothing else as far as I can tell. But personally I still haven’t gotten over the rice incident to be honest and will likely only go back if I find a way to smuggle my own rice into the restaurant.

I’m not sure what it is about Fitzroy and options but there seems to be many. Fitz Curry Café is one of your Indian options on Johnston Street. I’ve eaten here a few times, both in the venue and take-away. I have never been disappointed but i have never been able to praise the cuisines. The Vegetarian menu will see you pay no more than $ 11 for a main, but having sampled most of them, i must report a pretty lackluster experience. It’s like certain flavours are missing(I do eat a lot of Indian take-out). Last time we sat in here, i had the Pumpkin Masala which has a base of butternut pumpkin in a creamy sauce and to be quite honest, was something i could have prepared by myself at home. Definitely edible(i like to think i’m a good cook) but when i eat out, i expect to be wowed!

Maybe organic really means ‘lacking in all rich flavors’… I want spicy Indian food. The hotter the better! But I must have had ‘weak guy’ written all over me when I came to Fitz Curry. Asking for spicy… even additional spicy, and I never broke a sweat nor reached for the water. Good enough flavor, but some other places(in the CBD) do it much better. And the naan wasn’t garlicky enough… and I know that is hard to accomplish. Luckily the wine is SO cheap. We’re talking teens and up for a whole BOTTLE. I was reaching for that glass instead of the water the whole time. Do look to the specials board, though, because we tried a special fish curry that was far better than anything off the regular menu.

The one thing I love about Fitzroy is the amount of options you have for food. Also, how there seems to be at least one good restaurant that focuses on food from a particular country. Sometimes, there is even two. Lucky for me, Fitzroy does have a couple of good Indian food options nearby. The Fitz Curry Café is definitely one of them. Although the Fitz Curry Café isn’t my go to Indian restaurant(I prefer Indian Tukka), every time I’ve been here it has been consistently good. The service is friendly and quick. The food is good and quick. It’s also a reasonably priced restaurant with entrees at $ 9 and mains at $ 13. Although the food is good, the taste doesn’t stand out in any way. It’s difficult to explain, so I won’t. The Fitz Curry Café is the best option if you want something centrally located in Fitzroy. They also do take away for those lazy days.

The best Indian in Fitzroy. And I always order WAY too much food because I can’t help myself. More specifically, I can’t help from ordering the onion bahjia, which is nice and crispy on the outside and soft and savoury inside. I always keep some of the mint yogurt you get with the pappadums when you sit down to spoon on top — yum! Plus they’re $ 6 for four large bahjias(is that the plural?) so they’re a good plate to share, or just pretend to share. As a lover of vindaloo, I can highly recommend the fish vindaloo here. The fish is cooked to a perfect texture and the sauce is genuinely spicy. Otherwise I usually go the veg options — the baigan patyala(eggplant with tomatoes, ginger, garlic and coriander) is great, as is the malai kofta. And the naans and roti… yeah, see why I always order too much! You can BYO wine but it’s also very reasonably priced by the glass. And beer is relatively cheap too — there’s Cooopers and Boag’s but you’ve gotta have a Kingfisher to wash this food down.

As the website proudly proclaims, Fitz Curry do ‘free home deliver’ when you order over $ 40 of food. Now, to some people $ 40 worth of curry may sound excessive, but I’m a hardened curry eater and can fit twice as much saag paneer in my stomach as I can other, non-curry foods. The menu offers all the standard north Indian dishes, from malai kofta to rogan josh and good prices, and it’s generally quite tasty. If you’re eating in they’ll let you BYO(with $ 1.50 corkage). I know some people who are die-hard Fitz Curry fans that won’t hear a word against it. But for me, the reason I choose Fitz Curry over other Indian restaurants in the area is because of their ‘free home deliver’, or if I’m eating in, the fact it’s located smack-bang between many, many bars, and my bed. It is good, but it’s not great.

As I’ve mentioned on numerous reviews regarding Indian restaurants and takeaways, I’m pretty hard to impress when it comes to this kind of cuisine. Having moved into the Fitzroy area, Fitz Curry Café became my local curry house. The food was pretty good and they are open 7 days a week between 5 and 10. I also have a few friends that swear by it. The staff were generally really happy when we were there(India were about to win the cricket world cup) and the service was pretty good too. The naans were good, as were the curries. But the level of flavour did not smack me in the way that a curry should. Since finding firstly Fitzroy Curry House and latterly Indian Tukka, I haven’t really been back to Fitz Curry Café. It’s probably the best one right in the heart of Brunswick Street but travelling that little bit further to the Fitzroy Curry House and(especially) Indian Tukka is worth it in my book.
