As a Malaysian, unfortunately, we are quite particular when it comes to Malaysian food(well, at least for me). There are many places in Melbourne to get my fix, but I always come back to Malaymas — and I always order the Fried Kuey Teow, as theirs is the best that I’ve tasted in Melbourne, without any disappointment. It’s a humble restaurant(I like it that way), with a menu to satisfy your Malaysian cravings. They do really good Hainanese Chicken Rice and hot Horlicka too — mmmm… The only downside(for me) is the roti canai — still yummy, no doubt, but can’t beat made on-the-spot rotis. Decently priced and generous portions, lovely friendly staff too. I highly recommend Malaymas.

When you are craving for Malaysian food in Melbourne you should drop by at Malaymas. It’s a cosy Restaurent located in Fitzroy. Tmyou should call for a reservation before you come here as it could be quite packed during the weekends. There are tons of yummy Malaysian food to order. I be tried the hainanese chicken, the meat is soft and succulent with the jelly like skin. Love the cucumbers and soya sauce with it, definitely should try with the chili sauce. Another fav is the beef rendang. The meat is so soft. It kinda melts in your mouth the sauce is really fragrant super yums if you eat it with white rice. We tried the fried kangkung with chili belacan too. It’s awesome, it makes me think of home. If you would like noodles there are hokkien mee which is the fat noodles fried in black sauce. Another is the curry laksa which is the curry coconut milk soup with Vege and noodles.

My excuse to visit Malaymas for a laksa finally came when I locked myself(and the friends I invited over for dinner) out of the house. Chuck your keys into Merri Creek and treat yourself, I say! Nothing better on a cold winter’s night, and we were not disappointed. Staff were friendly and soon found us seats, and our laksas(2x seafood, and vego for me) were hearty and full of tasty bits. A bit of roti on the side(for another source of salt, fat and coconutty deliciousness) and you’ll roll out happy. I’m cultivating a Location-based Laksa List so I will always know where to get one, and am pleased to have a Fitzroy addition to that list in Malaymas. (also LongPlay next door is great for a relaxed drink afterwards if you’re so inclined).

The best laksa in Melbourne. I have never ordered anything else. When I first moved to Melbourne I was uninitiated with Laksa. My roommate brought me here for my first dinner and was blown away with the creamy broth and fresh ingredients with that lovely touch of mint on top. After visiting several other places this still reigns supreme. Like laksa? Come here.

I reckon this would be the best place to get Malaysian food in the Melbourne metropolitan area. The price is reasonable, while the serving is decent. You at least try one of Malaysia’s signature dishes when you visit — Fried kueh teow. This is the most delicious and authentic fried kueh teow in all of Australia.

I just got back from Malaymas after seeing some rave reviews on Unilocal and what can I say… I was really impressed. It was so long ago that I lived in Malaysia and I constantly crave it. I’ve probably forgotten what authentic Malaysian hawker food tastes like but nevertheless the fare at Malaymas came pretty close to how I remember it. The roti canai was delicious, the ayam goreng(fried chicken) was a juicy starter. The mee goreng had all the elements of a mamak and the nasi lemak with beef rendang was melt in your mouth. Dinner for two for $ 40 is pretty damn cheap too. I don’t know too many people of Asian origin in Fitzroy North, yet Malaymas had plenty. It’s a great sign that it is worth travelling to.

Malaymas, located right next to LongPlay in Fitzroy North, serves authentic Malaysian hawker dishes. When we arrived, it was quite busy. We didn’t have a table reservation, but we put our name on the list and went next door to LongPlay for a drink. When we got back, our table was ready. On the menu were various Malaysian dishes — mee goreng, lasi nemak, im goreng, beef rendang, roti canai — so many delicious looking dishes. We started with my favourite, roti canai. I love how the roti is soft and flaky and the curry thick and spicy. It tasted great. We shared an Indian mee goreng and a lasi nemak — both dishes were great. My partner indicated that they were both quite authentic. I just have to believe him. Our entire meal was $ 40, which is quite cheap for two entrees, two mains, and two non-alcoholic drinks. They don’t serve alcohol there, I don’t think. The service was surprisingly very good with friendly staff. Staff apologised for delays and were quite diligent.

I cannot speak highly about this place, I go there at least twice a month, it is consistent, they are friendly, it just rules. Malaymas reminds me of the little Malaysian restaurants I frequented while a student in New Zealand in the 1990s. They do a classic Malaysian menu consisting of basic laksas, rice and noodle dishes and their prices are super low. From very early in my visitations of this place, they remembered my face and over the five years I’ve been a relatively regular customer, their faces have stayed the same, which speaks volumes about the kind of family establishment Malaymas is, and the way the staff and customers are treated. You will always be greeted with a smile here and that is a rare and joyous thing these days. This is not fine dining by any stretch, but the food is always fresh and tasty. Personal favourites are the Singapore noodles and any of the laksas(they’ll give you separate takeaway containers for the soup and noodles to keep it all fresh!) and the nasi goreng is always a winner. You can’t have a beer here, but their muddled lychee drink is awesome and wait times are low, so you can always duck out to the boozer later. If you want solid, delicious Malaysian food in the inner-north, Malaymas is the spot.

Cheap Malaysian hawker food is their claim to fame, and every suburb should have at least one establishment just like Malaymas. My favourite dishes here are the curry laksa(less than $ 10!), nasi lemak special, Indian mee goreng, and the fried kueh teow. None of them will make you think that you’ve just been served up dinner in KL, but it’s still flavoursome, and as close as you’re going to get to good Malaysian makan in Fitzroy North. The restaurant is pleasant enough and, as far as I can tell, never very crowded so you’ll never have to wait very long for your order. The staff are really lovely and will never rush you, so you can take your time over their generous servings.
