This cute little café is one of my faves. It’s low key, effortlessly decadent and gives you a warm fuzzy feeling when you leave. I stumbled upon it one weekend and love making the trip back to revitalise and restore my batteries after a long week

I use to go to the school next door when I was little I can Reiner the little milk bar next door and getting icy poles there in summer. The café brings back so many memories and has great coffe, I love the brownies they are the best filled with chocolate and dried figs. It’s a great little café.

Approaching Julio’s in North Fitzroy you are bound to find a whippet out the front tied and waiting patiently. If not a whippet than some other kind of self-conscious fashionable accessory pet. That’s the crowd that comes here, and it rubs me the wrong way most of the time. The food they serve is basics that are done well to an extent, but is not reflected in the number of attendees and their sheer resilience to banality. Maybe it’s the orange tarts, these beasts are a real winner with your coffee in the morning or late afternoon. Breakfast, while the same normality with little experiment is also a trusty staple.

Situated on the corner of a quiet suburban street, Julio’s has managed to create a wonderful, welcoming place. I often love to stop by on my way home just to sit near the big open windows and admire a sunny day. Plus it helps that their coffee is truly magical. I’m no expert, but I am a coffee addict and I know exactly what I like. The food is rather impressive also. I ordered the French toast with quince paste, pistachios and labna. It’s the quince that really makes this dish. At first glance you think it’ll be too much or too sweet but when eaten all together with a smear of labna, I tell you it works. Keep in mind there’s no maple syrup, so that stops the dish from being overly sweet. Their homemade donuts with a custard or jam filling are all the rage here, so if you happen to stop by, and they haven’t run out yet, grab a couple.

Julio’s is one of those fantastic little gems that only the locals could ever know about, which is what makes it so special. This cute little café is on a suburban street in the middle of Fitzroy North, so if you live on Miller St you quickly become a regular. The coffee is served perfectly by the hipster staff behind the machine, and they are always ready to spark up conversation with you. The food is classic café-style — tasty toasties, poached eggs and porridge. Simple but delicious. There is a school right next door which means there is often some youngsters running about, and look, it is a bit out of the way for the majority of Melbourne. But if you happen to be nearby, I recommend you make a pitstop to this quirky café.
