I’m not sure about the sushi, but their udon soup isn’t amazing. I ordered the vegetarian udon which was supposed to have vegetables, mushrooms, tofu and omelette in it(but I asked to take out the omelette) and there were maybe 5 strips of tofu floating in soup with noodles and THATWASIT! What’s more is that I’m pretty sure the soup was mixed with chicken or some other animal stock, when it’s supposed to be just a miso/soy base. I even found bits of minced meat at the bottom of my soup!!! Really not impressed and for $ 9.90 a bowl, it’s really not worth it at all and way way overpriced. Won’t be returning. They shouldn’t be advertising ingredients that aren’t in it either and perhaps should mention the soup isn’t actually vegetarian.

Sakura is my go-to sushi bar in the Eastern suburbs. Located in the Firle shopping plaza, tucked in next to the fruit and veg market, is where you will find this little store. The thing I love most about this place is the range of different flavours, which is surprising for a small store. Along with some of the mixed packs, I also enjoy the sweet and sour pork, sweet corn, chicken avacado, and california sushi rolls. Oh and the cold rolls are friggin awesome as well. ANDTHESPRINGROLLS. Everything, I’ll have one of everything. I’m a regular here, usually grabbing an assortment of goodies and sitting outside in the sun enjoying as much as I can fit. The staff are standard, don’t expect much conversation, but it’s quick which is the main thing. And later in the afternoon comes the ‘3 for $ 5′ special, which I take advantage of as much as possible.

Sakura is good, reliable sushi that is always there for you when you need it. My favourites are of course the cold rolls(massive cold roll fan!) which come in beef and seafood and the prawn and avocado rolls. I have never ordered the noodle or soup dishes that they make on site and serve to you on the tables outside but they are reasonably priced. The staff however, are not amazing and I have taken note of their rough at best customer service several times I have been there. As I work in the same centre we are entitled to 10% discount, which I only get if the person who serves me remembers, even though I go there in my lunch break and am wearing my uniform. Duh. Secondly, I waited while one girl served another man, whilst the other guy serving was on his Iphone — he looked up and saw me and then kept texting. Not good!

Splendid sushi at Sakura’s. The menu is one you’ll spend a few minutes pondering and land on something delicious. Devour anything from chicken to eel. I actually had my first Udon there, I was hesitant at the time but it was jam-packed of lavish vegetable and perfectly cooked noodles. The staff are always affable and the prices are great for a quick roll or a full blown Nipponese meal.

Sakura — the name is synonymous with good sushi, all around town — but the thing that gets me is that no two stores have the same range of products. Sakura at Firle absolutely rocks the menu, featuring some really light battered dim sims on sticks, glorious spring rolls and prawn balls, and the one sushi roll I simply can’t go past, BBQ Duck. I love sushi, anyway, and I’m a complete duck addict, so duck sushi is just gonna hit all the right spots for me. All the other rolls are great, too — my oldest daughter is as smitten with the tempura chicken as I am with the duck… saddly my youngest is still sushi-phobic, she does like the dim sims on a stick though, so we can all leave happy when we do go. As well as the usual sushi rolls, and packs of seaweed encased morsels, they also do a selection of cooked dishes, noodles and soups, etc. The more I write about this, the more I’m craving it… not fair! Later in the afternoon, they clear the shelves for the day with a ‘3 rolls for $ 5′ special — this does coincide quite nicely with the trip home from the school pickup so if not too many of you could pick up on this, it’d be appreciated :) Advance notice, and they’re happy to prepare platters of sliced sushi rolls — a dead easy way to cater for a party or some pre dinner nibbles. Don’t forget to try those BBQ Duck Sushi Rolls, whatever you do :)
