Both my wife and I are keen gardeners so we tend to spend a lot of time in nurseries buying plants or stuff to do with plants. We usually come here. Hargreaves is one of the last real family owned nurseries left these days. Most of them are now part of large chains and those that we have seen join the chains have lost something. They still sell plants but they seem to take a back seat to the the gift shops and cafes and ornaments and other tat that presumably have higher profit margins than plants. Hargaves sells plants. And stuff to do with plants. There is minimal tat and maximal plants. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and mostly family members or friends of the family so they stay around. They don’t turn over their staff every 5 minutes like other seem to. This means the staff actually know stuff about the things they sell and can make sensible recommendations. Protip — Join their garden club. It gives you a discount(and they send you an email and voucher on your birthday). Another protip — if you want trees, particularly fruit trees, wait till the end of winter, they always have a bare root tree sale where you can pick up some great stuff cheaply. There is a café or restaurant of some kind in behind the main nursery. Its a separate business though and we’ve never been there so don’t know anything about it.
