Definitely the best sandwich joint in Sydney! You can choose to be as healthy as you like by having salads, or go big with their generous serving of sandwiches! I always order the schnitzel sandwich with cabbage and caramelised carrot. I’m such a regular that as soon as I walk in, the staff know already what I want! now that is service when you consider the hundreds of people that flock here on a daily basis!

I’ve never heard of this place before, so when my partner said there’s a good sandwich place nearby I was all ears and we zipped right over.
I made the mistake of coming here after a dental procedure so half of my mouth was numb and I couldn’t taste anything except with the right/​right rear side of my tongue, which means I’ll need to revisit this place for a proper verdict.
Anyway, since I could only taste bitter, sour, and semi-​salty take this review with a grain of… salt. I had the chicken schnitzel special on brown for $ 12.50 (typically $ 7.50) and the special comes with boiled egg, caramelised carrots, potato salad, avocado, tomato, and cheese.
With my half assed tongue I could tell that this was delicious, especially the caramelised carrots. I could do without the potato salad though, that was just unnecessary filler, same goes for the egg.
The sandwiches are pretty big, not Malibu big but decent sized enough that if you weren’t that hungry you could take one home to eat later.
Best sandwiches in Sydney? No, but pretty good nonetheless.
The salads looked delicious as well, have to say the caramelised carrots are a winner here.
Will be back with proper taste buds.

South Dowling Sandwiches are honestly the best sandwiches in Sydney. The sandwiches are delicious, service is pretty quick, and prices are very reasonable.
If you haven’t tried them before, the chilli chicken sandwich with caramelised carrots is a good place to start. But if you can’t handle chilli, then anything with caramelised carrots is my recommendation.

South Dowling Sandwiches are pretty incredible. Their shop is small and basic just from looking at the shop from the street you most definitely do not expect the culinary delights they produce on a daily basis.
First of all the bread is exquisite. You can choose from white or brown sourdough which is so soft in the middle but crunchy on the outside. And massive! The last time I had one for lunch I couldnt eat dinner. Great on the purse!
Their range of delectable fillings is second to none too. There are so many delicious things to choose from and so different to every other sandwich bar. The roasted and caramelized carrots are an absolute must.
Do yourself a favour and get to South Dowling Sandwiches. Simple concept. Delicious taste.

Um, YUM. South Dowling Sandwiches is another one of these cult Surry Hills sandwich places, except the special here for me is the Tuna Salad. The cues down the street at lunchtime are a hint of how good this salad is. People come far and wide for this salad (well, I have driven from my place on the other side of town specially). This of course is no average tuna salad with the combination of ingredients including caramelized carrots, beetroot, beans, potato, cucumber, roma tomatoes, lettuce, mayo and of course tuna. Top it off with some thick cut brown bread and you’re in some kind of food heaven. This salad will set you back $ 11.50 but it is worth that much and more. Try it. You won’t regret it!

I couldn’t wish to live across the road from any other sandwich shop. South Dowling sandwiches deserves the huge lines that snake it’s entrance. Camouflaging itself in the skin of a Surry Hills semi, this very modest establishment is a favourite that I share with many other Sydney siders.
Locals flock to the old-​fashioned ‘pick-​your-​ingredients’ sandwich bar for their famous sweet chilli chicken sandwiches, and salads. After a small wait outside the entrance, you’ll see all the fresh produce pilling up in stacks, which only confirms they understand how busy they can get. The modest and homely kitchen resonates with care and attention, where they’d rather keep you waiting a few more minutes, than serve anything less than perfect.
One thing to remember is that these sandwiches are huge, enough to feel two people — so If you prefer, eat half now, and take the rest home, or back to work to eat later.
If you want to avoid the lines, try to go mid-​week outside of the lunch rush, or late afternoon on the weekend.

To review or not to review, that is the question.
I had some serious apprehensions when deciding whether or not to review South Dowling Sandwich, because, well, it’s so damn good!
You might be thinking to yourself, «Why is this girl getting so excited about a sandwich?» But you will never understand how good a sandwich can be until you visit this place.
Be sure to get there early (before midday) because come lunchtime, there’s a line out the door and you might miss out on some of your favourite toppings.
You can either choose a sandwich from the menu board, or create your own. My personal favourite goes a little something like this:
* White bread (you can choose between the brown and white loaf, and slices are cut to order, ensuring freshness every time).
* Chicken schnitzel.
* Red pesto.
* Caramelised carrots.
* Rocket (and not the sad looking, wilted variety you find in the supermarket).
* Potato– that’s right, potato on a sandwich, carb on carb, so filling, so good.
* Cheddar cheese.
* Avocado.
These are just a few of the toppings you can choose from, but be warned, the more you add, the more expensive your sandwich is going to be. Each topping costs approximately $ 1 extra, so by the time you’re done, your $ 8 chicken schnitzel sandwich will cost $ 15.
But I guarantee it will be the best sandwich you’ve ever tasted.
