I showed up as a single, without a reservation on Saturday night at 7pm fully expecting to have no availability. I walked in and my was full. I asked the host and he said they were completely full with a 30 minute wait. I said thank you and walked out the door. I crossed the street and i heard someone say excuse me. He had a table that just left and he came outsides and crossed the street to let me know. Boy was I glad. I had the calamari which was incredible. It is spicy but not overwhelming. I also had the red curry chicken which was fresh tasting, perfectly spicy, and delicious. This place is excellent and I would definitely recommend. I was in town on business and alone which was a little awkward as the atmosphere was primarily couples.

Consistently excellent. It’s a standard bearer of what used to be a national secret; Canberra is the home of amazing food. While so many funky places come and go, this establishment has been a stalwart. Lovely Asian fusion served with considered purpose. Just fantastic.

With a basic travel meal allowance to shout dinner on an overnight business trip, my friend and I were very excited to see the ‘early bird dinner special’ sign at the front of Chairman &Yip! They open at 6 and if you can vacate your table by 7:30pm, you get entrée, main & a glass of red or white for $ 45! It’s fine dining, and although we were VERY underdressed the staff were absolutely fabulous and their attention to detail was great. Entrée was a choice from 3, but all options on the special list were designed to share, so we enjoyed pesto stuffed mushrooms with noodles and calamari — both fabulous! For mains we shared as well; the portugese paprika chicken was very tasty with a great sauce and toppings. The salmon stole the show though, it was perfectly cooked with a sticky soy & cinnamon crust and served with white rice… We couldn’t get enough! All in all, the special was great value, the food brilliant, and the service superb. Décor wasn’t to my tastes but that’s about all I could fault!

I can’t really fault it. Expensive for my usual habits but a good experience. $ 8.50 for a stubby of beer. Cost price is less than $ 2. I had beef and scallop hot pot for main — $ 32 or so. I think I’d prefer the Vietnamese place one kilometre way that I was at recently for less than half the price. But it was tasty. Rice was dished out but then taken away. Shame. Waiters kept filling water glasses. But no rice. :-( I’ll probably go to a better value place in future. But it was nice.

We just had the most amazing, flavorsome dinner, accompanied with fantastic, friendly service! We have been to Silks at the Crown Casino in Melbourne & this was even better. Loved it all. Thanks for the experience!

We are visiting Canberra from the US and want to go to the best restaurants this place has to offer, so based upon a recommendation of a friend, we went to Chairman and Yip. After walking all over Canberra Center and asking three people for help, we found it. It’s right near a gelato place with a stand up sign on the sidewalk that isn’t very bold, so we walked right by it. The restaurant inside is very nice and elegant. We got there in time to take advantage of the«early bird» dinner special(which means you have to vacate the table by 7:30 pm). For $ 38.50 a person, you pick one entrée(from four choices) and one main(from about 5 choices). We both got the chicken wontons with chilis for the entrée and they were superb. My husband said he would go back just for those. For the main, he ordered the slow-cooked beef and I ordered the pan seared chicken. The beef was good but lacked some kick and was a bit fatty. The chicken was delicious(although it was a bit fatty too and had a little gristle). Both came with sticky rice which was perfectly cooked.

I have been to this restaurant twice now, food is elegant, genuine Chinese flavor, great service, however personally I prefer hearty Chinese food. It’s a great place for corporate lunch/dinner. It’s a bit pricy.

This is the best tasting Chinese food I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. I have been to Beijing, Guanzhou, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. This is some great stuff. The locals really do not know how well off they are having the Chairman and Yips in their area. The calamari is flavor city. The eye fillet of beef with shallot & spring onion sauce is fabulous. The spicy lamb Shan-Tung style is something to remember. The place is small with an upstairs area. Fills up fast. Reservations would be a good idea. It is right in the middle of the ACT downtown area, about three blocks from the casino.
