Don’t come here unless you really crave dumplings. The customer service is probably the worst in Newcastle. They have somewhat of a monopoly on dumplings, though they are reasonable. Price is a little high too. Overall if somewhere else opened up I’d be there in a flash.

The only reason this place deserves three stars is for the food(which is fantastic!) the service is HORRIBLE. Every. Single. Time.

The service is very poor. No one cares and the staff have very limited English. We ordered the beef and coriander dumplings which came out tough and undercooked. The staff refused to acknowledge this as we brought it to their attention. We will never go here again! I’m feeling ill thinking about those disgusting dumplings. One star because I can’t give no stars!

I really enjoy this place… especially the setting(especially the outdoors area on a warm summer evening). Love the relaxed atmosphere. Love the food.

I’ve been coming here from the moment it opened. The choice and taste of food here caught my attention and I’ve been back regularly with all my guests. And we have a lot of them! A broad variety on the menu that seems to me authentic. Down to the shredded jelly fish. ;) All the food tastes great. This has been the only restaurant to get me to eat tofu and like it. Very casual dining either inside or out. Great atmosphere. When ordering, don’t plan on the food coming out all at once but when it’s ready. Sometimes reminds me of a Chinese Tapas bar. :) But I love this place. If you need something. Don’t be afraid to ask for it.

I’m a fan of New Shanghai alright. It’s nice to see something a little different around Newcastle and this authentic-chinese orientated venue is popular and I hope it lasts. it certainly seems to be going strong. The food is mostly authentic styled chinese cuisine… the scallion pancakes, a traditional comfort food are a welcome sight and not often seen, even if they’re not quite as good as other places. The xiao long bao is good and they have a strong range of mains and specials. It gets busy, so a reservation is recommended… a word of warning though. word on the street is that they do have trouble getting and keeping staff, so service can be slow and reservations not always strictly adhered to(I was 40 minutes waiting for a table, despite a reservation… not good if you are going for a pre-movie meal). Otherwise New Shangai is well worth a visit,

Great for a quick snack or a big feast. Varied and constantly evolving menu that goes well beyond the core offering of dumplings. The only place in Newcastle doing authentic xiaolongbao, and worth a visit for these alone!
