Went there, looking at the price on the board outside of the restaurant, I was interested in ordering satay chicken on rice. It costs 8.30 as per listed at the front. However, after I ordered, I got disappointed with the food. Very little amount of chicken and lots of vegetables. When I was going to pay, I got charged 8.80, 50c extra. When I asked the owner, she mentioned the price listed at the front is the price that is 2 years ago. This is misleading! Careful of the price listed when you come to this restaurant, better go somewhere else where they put current price, not price from 2 years ago.

you don’t end up here for awesome service. but that’s not what this place is about. bad(i mean great) 80s music and mouth watering steamboat. quite cheap if you take a crowd with you and share the spoils. not as busy earlier on in the week but they can get under-staffed because of this. thumbs up for steamboat cuisine though.

Despite the prominent address on the corner of Victoria and Lygon Streets, Number One Steamboat is easy to pass unnoticed. I wouldn’t have paid attention myself until a friend returned from working in Manila with a new found love of shabu shabu, also known as steamboat. Steamboat is basically where you get a selection of raw meat and vegetables, and cook them yourself in a hot broth. At first I was a bit nervous about having an open flame so close to my person(I’m really clumsy) but in the end I loved it! It’s a really social, fun way to eat — you interact over the food, plus you get to pick and choose which items you do and don’t want. The vibe at Number One Steamboat is pretty tacky(think fluro lighting and a Brian Adams soundtrack), however I felt it added to the experience. It’s licensed, so after a bottle of wine or two you’ll end up signing along to the eighties soundtrack and trying to cook the napkin holders. Fun times!
