Check out this lived-in performance space in Trades Hall. Like all good performance venues, this one has some character. Think wood floors, high ceilings, and city views through the red curtained windows. Oh, and like all good performance venues, there’s a bar at the back. Seating can be added or removed, making it a flexible space for all kinds of different events. The Bella Union calendar is packed with parties, comedy, performances, and charity events. Stop by this this unpretentious venue for a night of entertainment with the creative folks in the Melbourne community.

Whaaaaaat? Hardly anyone has given Bella Union a review? This is a travesty, because it’s jam-packed with awesome. There is something on every night of the week at this upper-story bar snuggled into the historic Trades Hall in Carlton. They cater for all tastes. Want rockabilly dancing? Check. How about storytelling(with the every-so-often Rocket Clock)? They’ve got it. Go-go dancing? Anna’s Go-Go Academy is there every week. Comedy? They have acts in all the time. Spoken word nights? The monthly Slamalamadingdong is one of the best-attended in the entire country. Late-night dancing? Check out The Finishing School. It’s worth signing up on their mailing list just to keep on top of all the amazing things have have on offer. Events aren’t that pricey, and they’re well worth your time. I’ll see you on the dance floor and/or in the audience!

This is part of the traded hall, another area removed from the left wing discussion group that sometimes occurs. I was most impressed with the bar here at Bella Union– The bar manager has selected very good drinks. Lucky duck cider, Holgate beers, which are very good, as well as Westwinds, Hendricks and Plymouth Gins, There’s the sloe one too. Gypsy cider and another on tap– last time I went anyway, and all in all good drinks plus well established favourites that won’t break the bank such as coopers, and other cheaper options. Wooden flooring and a large high ceiling; this place does show it age, but that’s a good thing. Heritage union flags are also on display. It’s a great place to hire out for events of which ever nature you want. A stage is included, so its good for gigs or talking events as there is a audio stage control terminal booth thing. An old spacious building with lots of history, big windows and areas that can be cordoned off for appropriate purposes.
