Moretons Brasserie

Moreton’s is classic French Brasserie with an excellent cellar of French and Australian wines. Quietly, competently they serve from a menu that varies with the season’s bounty.

Moretons is a classic, classy French restaurant on Rathdowne Street that goes about its business quietly.
I really don’t know much about French food, other than that I often find it a bit too rich and meaty. I went to Moretons with a few girlfriends, but I was a little bit unsure if I’d like it or not. We had some duck pâté for starters (unethical, I know!) which was rich, but delicious. The did have all the other typically French starters like escargots, but I wasn’t quite ready to look at those!
For my main I had the braised rabbit which was beautiful — the meat was super tender and the sauce was full of flavour but still light. To finish off we had a cheese plate with some gorgeous French cheeses with a tasty nutty bread.
The wine list is a mix of local and French bottles at great prices — we stuck with the Australians and had a Yarra Valley sparkling followed by an Eden Valley Riesling, which were both drunk down with gusto.
The service was spot on, too — attentive but not overbearing, and our waitress was happy to joke about my phobia of some French foods. I’d definitely return here!
