At some point in every girl’s teenage years she dropped into an esoteric shop and spent her time there looking at the various precious stones, hippy-ish jewellery and packets of affirmation and tarot cards. Crystal Heart is a very clean version of this kind of establishment, with no long, mirror-skirted hippy mediums lurking behind the counter but rather friendly and somewhat normal looking people. The shop is filled with a mild incense, and the music is of the peaceful and relaxing variety. There’s a lot of books on alternative and natural therapies, mental health and the power of the inner whatever, affirmation cards and quotes all over the place, candles, aromatherapy kits and a wide selection of jewellery; surprisingly little of which is very«I bought this in an esoteric shop» looking. Some of the stuff is good for gift giving, and some things are surprisingly useful, such as items for around the house.

I grew up in a very sensible, no-nonsense household so I’m not sure why I have such a fascination with witchcraft, alternative therapies and feng shui. But needless to say, I feed this odd curiosity by visiting the few stores currently in Melbourne that specialise in this kind of hoo-hah — Crystal Heart is one of them. This seems like an odd place for such a shop, nestled amongst Little Italy, but the fact that it has been there longer than I have been alive suggests that they must be doing something right. Here you can find crystals, aromatherapy, yummy smelling candles and all sorts of witchy-looking jewellery making it a perfect place to head if you are looking for a gift with a difference for a mate(everyone loves a candle.) This definitely isn’t a store for just anyone, but is definitely well worth a look on lazy afternoons down Lygon street. You never know what you’ll find.

So this place might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re willing to keep an open mind and try new things then maybe you’ll find something interesting. Amongst the crystals and healing stones, you’ll find a range of jewellery, mostly silver, featuring semi-precious gemstones and unique designs. These would appeal to anyone, and would actually make great gifts. Or you may like to try out some aromatherapy, everyone’s doing it these days so there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. You can read up on Feng Shui, or even get a psychic reading. Trust me, Crystal Heart is worth popping into if you happen to be doing a bit of shopping along Lygon Street. In fact, it might turn out to be that secret place where you find the perfect gift for everyone you know, and maybe a little something for yourself along the way.
