Good old fashioned Melbourne pub. Don’t expect a fancy menu or wine list and do expect tv’s for watching sport and a welcoming vibe. Too many pubs have turned all la-di-da recently and lost their souls, but the Clyde stays true to itself and offers up cold beer and pub grub from a barman who enjoys working there and treats you like a regular(even if you’re not). I generally go after playing squash on a Tuesday night — which happens to be $ 13 Parma night along with $ 13 draught pints… you can’t beat it!!!

Despite the reputation for being a uni-pub, the Clyde was host to quite a few families eating early dinners when we were there recently, enjoying some afternoon sunshine in the beer garden. It wasn’t until after we finished our meals that a huge gaggle of uni-kids streamed in — wasn’t a problem at all, just made me feel old! One big plus with being a uni-pub is that you know there’s gonna be some great specials, and the Clyde doesn’t let you down, having drinks and food specials every night of the week. We got some pub standards — parmas and burgers — and they did the job. Probably wouldn’t rush back to eat there again, but would certainly pop in for a drink, if only to see what’s cool with the kids these days.

The Clyde is one of many bars in the area serving the drinking needs of students at Melbourne Uni. It’s a good size, it’s pretty clean, and the prices are reasonable. I dropped in today for lunch with a friend and decided to get the chicken parma which was their daily special. It fit the bill for what you’d expect from a pub parma: a good piece of crumbed and fried chicken breast, covered with a slice of ham, some tomato sauce, and a good layer of melted cheese on top, accompanied by a serve of chips.

The Clyde is much bigger than I remember it once being — it’s a great place to pop into after uni with a bunch of friends for size and quality/quantity of the meals at that price.

Due to its location, the Clyde is another popular bar for those boozy Melbourne Uni kids, particularly the Queen’s College bunch, however some very surprising happy hours and $ 12 parma nights will keep kids of all ages coming back. My youth was spent following my much smarter Melbourne uni friends around their local pubs(I was a La Trobe girl) and I would have to say that the Clyde was my favourite. While the atmosphere can often feel a little tense in the other locals — Puggs etc. — The Clyde is always relaxing. A gorgeous beer garden complements the vibe and is the place to be if you are a Carltonite in summer. I have also recently discovered their live jazz sets on Sunday — what’s sexier than that?! A pub for all ages, not just the uni kids.
