I was in the Camperdown area and needed a few items missing from my pantry for the chicken lasagne I was making that night. Walking down Missenden Road in search of a supermarket I found this unassuming shop front. There’s a limited range of fruit and veggies, and meats, but you’ll find everything else you need including Asian sauces, cosmetics and toiletries, pasta, cooking spices. Everything is clearly labelled and there are fewer, shorter aisles so you don’t have to spend three hours doing your grocery shopping. The girl working here was very helpful and friendly when I asked about whether they sold certain items. Unfortunately, no mince chicken so I wasn’t completely set for dinner but for such a small grocer, I was surprised with the variety of products on the shelves. There’s an ATM on premises.

The sun is out and I am parched! Like a flaming ball of light, which it is, the sun is oppressing me as though I were a commoner in medieval England. Forcing me to my knees and working me until I lapse into a state of dehydration. I’ll stop with the terrible metaphors, and I apologise to any medieval peasants who took offence. But the fact of the matter is, it is hot and I am thirsty. I walk around for a while looking for somewhere to get a drink, somewhere not too expensive. I find the Camperdown Grocery store on Missenden Road and venture in. It’s quite a large grocery store, small in comparison with massive chains such as Woolworths or Coles, but massive when you compare it to a an IGA or other independently owned grocer. They sell all kinds of things, everything you would find in one of the more prominent chains, such as toiletries, foods, magazines, stationary and drinks. I wander over to the fridge, the Mount Franklin water is $ 3, that’s a bit pricey. Thankfully, as it is a supermarket, they also have the less brandy brands. The ones that aren’t necessarily in the public mind, but are still water when it counts. I buy a $ 1.50 bottle of Frantelli’s. It’s still H2O. It’s not H2L or anything. The supermarket is spacious, well priced for a non national and the lady at the front counter greets me with a friendly smile. I take a quick look around before I head back out into the blazing sun, which probably isn’t too blazing, but due to a distinct lack of blaze during the rest of Spring, it is uncharacteristically ablaze. For all your local shopping needs, just a short walk from King Street and a block and half to Parramatta Road.
