When my margherita came out, I immediately thought«now that’s a pizza». The restaurant was full on a Thursday when the neighborhood as a whole was not crowded, which suggests that locals agree. Does their menu have a lot of vegetarian options? No. Is it cheap? No. Are the portions large? No. Is the ambience great? No. Do I want another one of those pizzas? Yes. It was fresh and nicely charred and despite its square shape tasted passably like a Neapolitan style pizza, albeit much saltier. I’m okay with that. Fair warning: between the gelato offshoot the restaurant has and the chocolate place across the street, I don’t know how I escaped without dessert.

I finally got around to eating at Sugo Mi after some time of hearing about their pizzas. We ate on a very busy Saturday night, bookings cannot be made at Sugo Mi but fortunately we didn’t have to wait for a table. I think it was a case of just turning up at the right time! Bruschetta to start was reasonable, a huge slab of crusty bread dosed with garlic, and with tomato liberally applied, but despite listing red onion as an ingredient this was missing. Bruschetta really needs good quality tomatoes to shine, and these were a little meh unfortunately. The pizza we ordered was the D.O.C.G — basically a Margharita with proscuitto. The pizzas here are oval shaped and come with a little wheel to cut it yourself, which is cute. The pizzas are definitely italian style, but the crust was very soft/doughy and lacked that crispness. In saying that though, it was still a good pizza. We also ordered Gnocci with a pork ragu which was absolutely mouth watering, the gnocci was clearly housemade, cut up into large chunks and the pork and tomato meat was just delicious. One of the best parts of the evening was tripping down into the little alleyway beside Sugo Mi where they have their gelateria. We chose three types to have and eat back at our table in the restaurant: Salted Caramel, Cake Batter and Turkish Delight. DROOL. so good!

Sugo Mi is Italian for Beautiful Tasty food. Okay, that’s not a true translation at all. But what is true, is that Sugo Mi ticks all the boxes, if you are looking for amazing Italian food, great value, and excellent service. Having been to Sugo Mi several times, it always lives up to expectations. Whilst they don’t take reservations and the place is always buzzing, getting a table doesn’t take long. Even if it does, it surely is worth the wait. Serving up a menu in typical categories of Primi, Secondi, Pizzas, Contorni, Dolce, as well as for the Bambinis(kids); its great that they also cater for guests with Gluten sensitivities and items are marked appropriately. Whilst the pizzas and pastas range from $ 20 — $ 33, the portion sizes are very large. More importantly, everything appears to be made with love, and the flavours, reflect this. So good, it can reduce a group of loud people on a table to inaudible moans of delight. Favourite dishes are the Spaghetti Bolognese, beef/pork ragu. I love that the spaghetti has a generous amount of beef/pork. The Fresh linguini, with prawns, garlic, chilli, & cherry tomatoes are exquisite. Look out for specials like the confit of duck Pizza. Fantastic. Service is attentive without being overbearing. Closed only on Mondays, Sugo Mi is located at the lively Oxford Street Precinct, in Bulimba.

We came here for the beef cheeks, which had sadly disappeared from the menu. Pizza and pasta were good, pork belly was great. 4 stars for the food; 3 stars for ambiance(next to busy road and sidewalk). Better to eat here at a time that it’s not packed.

Best pizza I have had in a very long time! We went there for a dinner after watching Despicable Me 2 in Hawthorne cinemas. I would love to give it 5 stars, but we had to wait really long time to get some attention of a waitress and food is quite pricey. It was a really busy Saturday evening and we didn’t have a reservation, but still. They have two types of pizzas, the one without the tomato sauce and the one with. Love that you have choice! PLENTY of different pizzas to choose from. Their pizzas are perfect size for one person — also I kind of like they are oval, not round. Thin, tasty, crispy dough. Fresh toppings.(drools) Served on a wooden board. Classy! :) They seem to have a choice of pasta, we all went for the pizzas tho. For drinks — good selection, but what bought me was GERMANBEERS. YES! Yum. A lot of tables there, but as I said — if you come over on Saturday night, you might struggle with service. They have plenty of heaters outside, so you won’t feel cold, even on a winter night. Also, if you feel like dessert, you can either get gelato from their menu or walk to the store in the back of restaurant and buy few scoops there. They also sell fresh stuff like olives, anchovies, cheeses… And if you’re REALLY craving some gelato for later, you can get it in big big boxes to go :))) Brilliant place. Need to go back soon!

Best pizza I’ve ever had in Brissy is from Sugo Mi! They seem to be specializing in Pizza(more than pasta), you can choose between the Rosso and Bianco selection(no tomato sauce). If you like seafood, Gamberoni is a Must. The oval shape pizza is of great size, tasty, fresh ingredients and the dough. the dough. it was simply perfect. Service was fast, attentive and kind. I accidentally dropped the fork on the floor and the next minute, a waitress came to me with a clean one. The only thing I could complain about is the amount of chilli in my Gamberoni. Told them to cut back on the chilli as I don’t like it too spicy. A little fresh chilli sprinkled on top of my pizza? Sure! But then, tears stung my eyes and I started breaking into sweat. Unfortunately, that was not mild.

Let’s be honest, there are quite a lot of average pizzas out there. My main motivation for buying pizza is usually so I don’t have to cook and because it is convenient, not because of the quality of the food. Sugo Mi is the opposite of this. They create a real meal and it is the food that bring you back. The prices are a little high, you won’t find discount coupons for here in your letterbox, but the food is arguably better for it. Toppings are fresher and you can both see and taste the ingredients. I quite like the Patate, with potato, cheese, pancetta and rosemary and also the carbonara pasta I had one time was really good.

The pizzas here are divided into two categories — ‘rosso’(red) and ‘bianco’(white). The former contains the eponymous ‘sugo’ tomato sauce and the latter doesn’t, leaving the white of the base as its defining characteristic. When I first checked the place out on recommendation of quite a few people I decided to make my order a takeaway to consume at home with my housemates, and seeing as two pizzas would just about do the trick(since I was paying, I reserved the right to the lion’s share ;) I thought I’d pick the most appealing looking from both the red and white options. While I ususally shy away from seafood on pizzas(sometimes I think it’s a bit of a waste), I was taken by the look of the ‘Gamberoni’ — sugo, garlic prawns, mozzarella, bocconcini, parsley and optional chilli(yes please!). On the whiter side of life I couldn’t resist the appeal of the promised ‘truffled honey’ of the ham-based ‘Ravello’. The verdict(realised after an excruciating drive home — delcious aromas wafting from the boxes made me really want to sneak a bite) is as follows: *The sugo: well balanced, sweet, tangy with a delicate mix of herbs. *The base: a little thicker than expected, but with a wholesome home-made rusticity. The outside was coarsely crisp and the inside a little fluffy, like any good freshly baked bread. * The toppings: generously portioned without overcrowding the palate. The prawns were good quality and large, the cheese rich and creamy, and the truffled honey provided a beautiful sweetness to the dish in lieu of the sugo.

I recently wanted to eat some Thai food on Oxford St Bulimba with 3 girlfriends of mine but it was closed(Boooo! On a Saturday even!) so we ended up across the road at Sugo Mi. There were a few people there, eating these pizza’s off these wooden boards and they looked nice… so we sat our nice butts down and ordered us some food. I got the Margharita pizza for my son(kids meal it said) that came out the same size as the normal pizzas! It was nice, but although the pizza crust was gourmet freshly made yadda yadda Unilocala… it wasn’t crispy… so it was droopy when I picked it up and there was hardly any topping… like I understand a margharita is a plain cheese pizza and you put basil on the menu, but 3 leaves of basil don’t really take over a pizza if you know what I mean. We ordered the bruschetta which was really nice actually… really wholesome yummy tomatoes all over it with olive oil buttery toasted bread… and the Palermo pizza(Sugo, leg ham, smoked mozzarella, prosciutto, parsley & evo) and the Salsicia(Mozzarella, pork and fennel sausage, caramelized onion & rocket). Sugo meaning tomato sauce base. The Palermo was nice… not enough toppings for the $ 23.90 you pay… but the Salsicia was kind of tasteless. Between the 4 of us, the meal cost us $ 139. Which really… is a bit expensive. That did include a drink each and a kids meal but really? I think this is a classic example of a restaurant that has incredibly fresh tasting ingredients a brilliant idea, pizza crust and it’s a bit wrong. The pizza combinations are questionable… so is the ‘sugo’ sauce. There aren’t enough toppings on the pizza and let’s face it, we never want to fill up on crust. On the flipside… there in the alleyway lies a deli which Sugo Mi sells all it’s italian stuff they use to make the pizzas and whatnot… they have super duper awesome gelati there… free tasting!

Sugo Mi is one of the classiest places you can dine on Oxford St. Having won a few awards for their food and service it’s great to see a locally owned business like this thriving. If you’re a bit of a foodie this is definitely the place for you. The pizza here is amazing; along-side simple and contemporary Italian food you won’t be disappointed. The staff are all very well drilled and very professional, the kind of service that surprises you when they make the extra effort. Be prepared to spend around $ 25 for a main meal though. It’s a pricier option compared to other places a few metres down the road but definitely worth a try if you don’t mind spending a little extra for excellent food. It was about out third time when some friends and I went last week and I still haven’t found something on the menu that I don’t like.
