Nice place with decent food and service, although it feels like they haven’t got their processes together yet. They are a bit slow and whilst I’m all for doing things right, there were just a lot of people in the kitchen and not much happening too quickly. Shame.

They make juices the day before and leave them in the fridge. Asked for a freshly made one and they wouldn’t do it. Weird. Juices are ok. Breakfasts are like dessert.

3 stars because I enjoyed my Pineapple Turmeric Anti-Inflammatory Juice. I found the menu to be lacking in choice, the staff to be un-affected/interested in paying attention to the customers and the property to be very noisy. It’s situated on a corner on busy Oxford Street in Bulimba and the super-heavy-duty blenders are positioned within the front of the café. I could barely hear myself think let alone reach some state of «bliss». Whilst I am glad Brisbane is becoming home to some genuinely healthy options for healthy eating, I’ve yet to find one that really has hit it spot-on with clean /paleo /superfoods for my expectations. For one, I expect a place called a Superfood bar to have actual food available. Coco Bliss mentions«super salads» on their website, but not one was in sight on the visit. They seem to focus on juices, smoothies, frappes & coffee. There was a cabinet with a few choices of bliss balls & «clean» baked goods. But, nothing substantial to speak of. Additionally, if you are going to focus on the«bar» side with bevvies as your main items, perhaps more bar-like seating would be appropriate. The property is on the small side, so seating space is limited, but available stools /chairs /benches are even more sparse. On the upside, the juice was brilliant and just perfect for my AI inflicted self.

Brisbane has finally picked up on the healthy eating trend as far as eating out goes… there have been a few places down on the GC that have done something similar for quite a while. That said, I was pleased to visit Coco Bliss Superfood Bar recently with my healthy eating loving sister. We both had acai bowls — blended acai berries with banana/apple juice into a very very thick smoothie topped off with 3 fruits of your choice(I had to go with blueberries — they are so ridiculously expensive to buy, when I come across any blueberry option its like coming across a goldmine) and muesli. The bowls were absolutely delicious and surprisingly filling. I also sampled one of their freshpressed juices, the Mighty Green juice, which was ridiculously healthy and made me feel amazing. There is a little window filled with sweet delights — all sugar free, raw and guilt free. I took home a slice of raw carrot cake that was I believe topped with cashew nut cream. My only hope is that they branch out a bit and have more savoury lunch type options… there are a couple of salads available but things are a little limited so far. There is quite limited seating as well which is unfortunate, the whole time we were there(and it was a weekday) the place was packed, I can only imagine what its like on a weekend.

Coco Bliss has quickly gained a following, and has a large customer base from the beginning. If you’re in a rush, this is probably not a good spot to pick up your smoothie/frappé/juice. It takes awhile. But feel free to pursue the yummy treats on offer. Most items here are organic and raw. No refined sugar on offer here. You have the choice of honey and maple syrup for your coffee(I recommend the maple). I have had both the chocolate peanut butter and the chocolate mocha smoothies with coconut water base. Yum, yum. It’s like sipping healthy candy. Even my husband liked the chocolate peanut butter — he can’t stand PB with anything else except on toast so I am happy to prove him wrong on several occasions. Check out their new herb gardens outside their windows. It’s a great concept: take what you need for your next meal, but take care of the garden as if its your own.

My only problem with Brisbane’s first ‘superfood bar’ is that its too far from my home for me to be able to justify going everyday. With nothing(as yet) but organic coffee, acai bowls, protein shakes, freshly pressed juices and raw treats, the bar has a novel concept that is right on trend and will appeal to the growing market of ‘clean eaters.‘ For those to whom the terms ‘superfood’ and ‘clean eating’ mean caped bananas and washed apples, a sign on the wall lists the ‘superfoods’ available(think chia seeds, maca, goji berries and the like) as add-ins to the menu items and their health benefits while a bookshelf opposite is stacked with tomes on clean eating(essentially eliminating any processed food, dairy and gluten), raw food and sugar free diets. I enjoyed an acai(‘as-ah-ee’) bowl — basically a very thick smoothie blended with acai berries, a superfood with plenty of good stuff in it. Topped with muisli, fruit and additional superfoods of my choice, it was sweet, delicious and made for a surprisingly filling breakfast. I couldn’t resist a slice of cake on my way out to take home, but luckily this treat was guilt-free, made with nuts and sweetened with dates and honey yet somehow managing to taste like cheesecake. I was disappointed the raw snickers bars I’d seen on the Coco Bliss Instagram page weren’t available, but its a great excuse to go back soon! Everything is prepared take away as there is only a long bench bar stools available for seating and be warned, you might have to fight quite a crowd on weekends.

Coco Bliss Superfood Bar is the newest addition to Bulimba’s buzzing Oxford Street, and the latest venture from the good people who brought you Happy Little Dumplings; Melita and Candice. The concept is simple. Offer organic«fair trade coffee», fresh cold press juices, Protein shakes, smoothies and super-foods to the ever growing health conscious demographic. By all accounts, the venture is off to a great start with staff being run of their feet, all day at their opening on Saturday(19/10/2013), having not slept the previous night! Up until at least the wee hours of Saturday morning, for last minute tweaks, and then reopening at 6:30am. Despite some minor issues and equipment failure, it appears that«super-food» bar concept in a suburb such as Bulimba, is a marriage made in heaven. Located next to Subway, Coco Bliss’s large bi-fold doors offers a modern and clean aesthetic inside, with the sky blue counter and banana tree inspired wallpaper at the back giving the store a very tropical feel. High bar stools dominate opposite the counter, and with the bi-fold windows open, look out to a terraced herb patch garden. Coco Bliss has on offer a daily range of salads, sandwiches and healthy sweet treats on top of their staples of Acai Bowls/Pink Pitaya Bowls, Muesli fruit salad bowls, Protein Shakes, Smoothies/Frappes, and Pressed Juices, as well as coffee. The menu and step by step instructions behind the counter offer what choices you have and what you can order. I decided to try their coffee,(supplied by Elixir coffee), a regular long black(12oz — $ 4), and also went with their regular sized Protein Shake($ 6.50). First step is to choose your liquid; Coconut Water, Almond Milk, or Soy Milk. Check! Second Step is to choose your«function»; «Gains» or «Shred». I had to smile a little as I hadn’t really thought about it this far. Seeing as its coming up to summer, and I have just started doing some weights(key word here is «some»), and I’ve always been a fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger I went with«gains». Besides, a slim kid like me could use some. Final Step is to choose your flavour. There’s Dark Chocolate, Choc Peanut Butter, Banana Berry, Coconut Mango, Strawberry and Macho. I go with the Banana Berry, a simple concoction of «mixed berries» and good ‘ol banana. I decided against«add-ins» for $ 1each, such as L-Cartanine, L-Glutamine, but I figured I’d have enough«gains» to be made. Service was friendly, despite their obvious fatigue, and I didn’t have to wait long. The long back coffee was a mild in flavour(i usually like mine strong), but at least it did not have a bitter taste. Bitterness is a big no-no for me. The protein shake was delicious, and quite a large size(despite it being a regular), and I inhaled it like a vacuum cleaner. I could feel my mass gains already, so Mr Schwarzenegger better watch out! Coco Bliss Super-food bar is a great addition to Oxford Street, and looks to cater to the many healthy(and wannabes like me) people of Bulimba and beyond. Bliss indeed.
