I can’t say that I have been here all that often, but when I have I have quite liked the place. I’ve known that this is a live music venue for some time, though was surprised the second time I came here to discover that they also have a second stage out the back in the beer garden, which means that you can go and listen to two bands, which is always cool, especially when one of the bands starts playing a song that you really don’t like(though it can be annoying when both bands are playing tunes that really don’t impress you, but then you can always walk outside and find another place). The beer garden is pretty awesome, as long as it isn’t raining(which is very problematic in Melbourne during winter, or at any time of the year for that matter). They also have a decent selection of beers on tap, including Brunswick Bitter, which I suspect originated from here.

Gotta love the brunny! Wednesday night’s been a usual spot for me and my mates since we found out about open mic night. Last semester a bunch of my international friends would muster up the courage after a few drinks to play but now I just go for the 10 dollar jugs & random acts. I don’t come here enough seeing as it’s literally only a block away but this will change once exams finish up. I’m super bummed I can’t go tonight which is why I’ve decided to get the word out for any one who may be available. With the ram stop right outside theres no reason for anyone to pass up the opportunity to chill at the brunny. Go grab some cheap beer and head here for a comfy night lounging with live music ASAP! There are always random bands playing from around the area and it’s always fun to hear new music. The best part though, yeah you didn’t think it could get any better did you? Well, the best part is the beer garden. You know a place has got to be good when they’ve mastered the layout of each room to suit pretty much anyone and everyone.

There’s a particular formula that all Brunswick pubs seem to follow, and I have to admit that it certainly works for them. Firstly, cheap beer is a must. These days cheap cider will also win a few extra points with the cool crowd, but it’s not a necessity. Secondly, live music. The grungier/kookier the better. Thirdly, mismatched furniture, ironic posters and dim lighting. I imagine a lot more thought goes into the décor than they’d ever admit. Add to this hot edgy bar staff and an even edgier crowd. Skinny jeans, asymmetrical haircuts and a multitude of tatts and piercings. Brunswick Green has all of the criteria covered.

My two crazy russian friends had arrived home in Melbourne safely from the adventure around Europe and were having a ‘welcome back’ party here. I’d never been before but everyone seemed to think this was a good venue for cheap drinks and relaxed atmosphere. That is exactly the perception i got out of it. You cannot miss that crazy purple sign above the door and once you enter the dimly lit venue has not a lot going for it, but everyone inside is totally chilled giving the place a real laid-back feel. We arrived and they were sitting out back so i ordered a drink and headed out to the large beer garden. There’s a large wooden communal table with small slum-couches scattered around. The venue is usually busy but never really feels ‘packed out’, such a great little place.

‘The Brunny’ is possibly one of the most underrated pubs in the northern suburbs. Live music and/or performance art every day of the week, a heated outdoor area, a pool table, a juke box and a regular onslaught of drinks specials throughout the week all line up to make this bar something a little bit special. Sure, the decidedly 90s logo looks more akin to that of a children’s street festival than a late night watering hole, and the theme of the décor seems to be centred around the phrase ‘I’m a pub, what did you expect?’, but there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about it all. For a pub located smack bang in the middle of indie hipsterville that is often host to hipsters, musicians and artists; it still manages to feel like the anti-hipster bar. The drinks menu caters to all booze creeds, with a range of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails(I recommend the ‘absolute kunt’), all priced from standard down to cheap. The live acts are just as varied, with anything from post-feminist performance art poets to pirate metal gracing the plinth in the front room. As such, it attracts a varied and largely friendly crowd, without comparatively less sleazes than most(but only comparatively), so it can have a different kind of vibe from night to night. Essentially, the Brunswick Hotel is one of those pubs at which you can generally have whatever kind of night you wanted. This is particularly true if you wanted a late one, given it possesses some of the longest licensing hours on this side of town; open until 3am weekdays and 5am Friday and Saturday. The Brunswick Hotel: an all-round solid venue.

It’s all about the music and cheap beer when you walk in the doors of the Brunswick hotel. They have live music most nights of the week and throw in a few cheap beer specials to keep the punters extra happy. The Brunswick proudly support local music, having a dedicated open mic on Wednesday nights and they also share their stage with larger local and international acts. The room is great for viewing music. The stage is viewable from all corners of the room although it can get a bit squishy by the bar. They have a pretty smick sound system as well. What’s with Hotels in Brunswick having massive beer gardens? This one is huge. The vibe out here on a sunny Sunday afternoon is fantastic as the conversation flows as well as the booze. Plenty of space to hold a party of your own. It’s also a good place to hide if the support bands in the front room are the loud side of crap.

A corner place with a whack purple, red and gold sign out the front, Brunswick Hotel is good in any weather. Good things every night of the week — from Monday poetry to Wednesday open mic to weekend bands. Good brews on tap — both beer and cider. Good beer garden — complete with mini stage for Sunday session bands on the odd occasion Huge sound — don’t go here to see a band and expect to be able to have a conversation anywhere near the stage, you may lose eardrums and tongues.
