QUT

My experience of attending QUT while studying in the graduate entry nursing program has been average. Compared to my previous bachelors and masters degrees education, all completed in the States, I’ve found this university to be lacking in a few areas. For instance, when registering for classes online the process has been ridiculous. Most classes are usually full within minutes (or seconds!) of enrolment opening and basically you get what you get! You will be waitlisted if you don’t get in, but if god forbid you need to swap a tutorial or practical class… good luck!!! They require «proof» of why you want/​need the swap and apparently the only acceptable reason is being a parent or carer. Forget work or other commitments, that’s not relevant. ;-)
While a few of my professors have been very intelligent and professional, unfortunately others have come across as unprofessional and abrupt. I’ve listened in horror as some international students have been ridiculed for their questions by teaching staff. In general and to keep this review brief, I have been surprised at some of the behaviours of teaching staff towards the students, especially at a university level. While there are positive and negatives to any school, I am seriously considering transferring to another university.

Visited the campus for the first time in a while, and I was impressed.
Look, even pre refurbishment, the cafeteria area far surpassed that of Kelvin Grove, and I suspect it’s gotten even better. I’d even seen people in the bar over this side of town; better location for the partying students I think.
We visited the lovely art museum, which is always worth checking out as the exhibits cycle regularly, and pop into the old Governor’s residence, which also has an art gallery inside.
But you know what? Check out the The Cube. Wow. That’s some impressive stuff.
And if you’re a QUT student, grab yourself a cubit account and load it up with some photos, videos, etc and go have a play. It’s some mighty impressive technology.
Beyond that, the campus is in a lovely location, squeezed between the river and the botanical gardens. I always enjoy heading into the gardens to find a spot where the city noise disappears, and just lying on the grass staring off into the sky.

QUT is a great university, and was my choice when I commenced post graduate study. The city location and night classes meant I could attend uni after work (which was fatiguing but I appreciated the option) and I could also knock a subject off as an intensive over 4 Saturdays which I REALLY appreciated.
Classes are bigger than they used to be first time round, but that’s more indicative of Australia’s education system than the university itself.
The research schools are top of the line and the library is extremely well stocked with a great area where copies of in demand books are only available on extremely short term loans (to stop little piggies holding on to all the good ones).

Good old QUT, or as some losers like to call it «the univeristy for the second world» or «the super TAFE», ignore all of those comments because QUT is neither of those, it is «the University for the real world». And that was probably one of the corniest sentences I have ever written. Regardless of that, QUT really is a solid university. UQ snobs may think their uni is better but I have been very satisfied with my learning experience at QUT.
At QUT, you are encouraged to work hands on; it will not always be about memoriseing what you read in a text book. They really want you to be prepared for the work you will do once you leave uni (hence, «the real world»). At QUT I felt, I was often left to analyse topics and make up my own mind over certain arguments.
Another thing UQ snobs will go on about is the facilities that their university offers but QUT also has some excellent shops and cafes surrounding the campuses (at both Kelvin Grove and Garden’s Point). Sure UQ may have more on offer but at the end of the day, shouldn’t what you learn be the main concern?
So if you are thinking of studying at QUT and are unsure because of any negative comments you have herd, I would suggest you think real hard before you make such decision. QUT has given me some very valuable skills and I appreciate the way they contributed to my education.

Having graduated from the Queensland University of Technology only a short time ago after spending time on both campus’ I have a fairly good idea of the what it has to offer. It has a lot of the ingredients needed to be a good place of learning — quality staff, up to date and well maintained facilities and cutting edge courses. I was more of an ‘absentee’ university student than the die hard, ‘know ever tutor by name’ style uni goer. That probably accounts to my lack of emotional connection to it as an institution but I also think the Gardens Point campus leaves much to be desired in terms of atmosphere.
With a location sandwiched between the Botanic Gardens and the Brisbane River the lack of views and ‘wow’ architecture seem like a wasted opportunity. And the most important part of any university — the campus bar — used to be a drab hall and has now been moved to a temporary location with even less atmosphere. The main library is servicable but always busy and it can be highly difficult to land a computer during peak times, a nightmare when you’ve got a deadline bearing down on you. With it’s lack of atmosphere and iconic landmarks it’s no wonder most students spend their free time in the gardens next door or in the CBD down the road.

As far as universities are concerned, QUT, is by far the more exciting and rewarding university one could attend. Okay, so I’m slightly biased since I’ve graduated from this university, however, I would not have chosen to attend here, had I not already believed it was the best university for me. I went to the Garden Point campus where I studied and graduated from a degree in Marketing and International Business.
The slogan for QUT is «real University for the real world». The slogan fits perfectly for the style of uni it is. It’s not pretentious like others, it shares a real value for education and sharing it with those who genuinely want to learn. This Garden Point campus is located right next to the Botanical Gardens so in between classes or lunch breaks, you will find a dispersed group of students studying, eating or relaxing in the park.
QUT, specifically Garden Point campus, offer the best facilities, a large library and plenty of activities to feed the hungry minds of students. It is conveniently located by the city so travelling here is easy. It can be tempting to wonder off though…
