I guess being a Footscray local means that we’re vietnamese food rivals with Box Hill, but we gave this place a go at a catch up with the relatives on easter monday! Standard Vietnamese cuisine, but didn’t taste as fresh or flavourful as many other places I’ve been. Unfortunately this wasn’t helped by the fact that service was patchy at best. They were really busy, we were very much squished on our table, and the food all came out at completely different times. I eagerly finished my meal before my cousin had even got his! Could be an alright spot for a quick casual meal if you’re in the area, but I don’t think i’ll be back.

Tien Dat is one of the most frequented places in the Box Hill strip, it’s hard to find an empty table and you definitely need to call and book. The food choices are excellent here and great value, Bun to Seafood Soup, Fried rice to Rockling Fish you are spoilt for awesome choices in Asian cuisine. Don’t expect amazing service, they are sometimes also slow out of the kitchen.

I would definitely make a booking here if you’re wanting to dine here for dinner. This place gets really packed and more often than not, they turn you away saying they’re booked. They have gluten free options, which is not too tricky to find anyway in a Vietnamese Restaurant. I try not to venture out and get anything other than the Bun — Lemongrass and Beef. They come in big serves but normally it’s so delicious I eat it all. I’ve tried a few other dishes but nothing that gets me too excited. The Spicy Bean Curd(Bean Curd lightly deep fried, tossed with spices, chilli and onion and served on a garden salad) however, I would order again, and again, and again. The specials seem to be not so special as they’ve been the same for a few months. I’m not complaining tho because the peking duck rice paper rolls are delicious. Packed with filling and served with a delicious sauce. The service is not amazing, and if they put you upstairs and there’s a large group booking, you probably won’t be able to have a conversation with the person next to you as the room seems to get realllllly loud. They have an outdoor option which is useful in the summer, not so much when it’s cold.

After all the positive reviews, I went here with 3 friends, one of whom is Vietnamese. The restaurant was quiet at that time, as we were in between lunch and dinner crowds. Staff were polite and efficient, and the service was fine. The food, however, was a bit on the heavy side, and we all felt a bit bloated after our meal. I don’t know if it was too much salt, too much oil or perhaps the dreaded MSG? As Jimmy J said on 3÷5÷12, «average at best but not the worst in melbourne».

Me and my boyfriend made a last minute reservation here when we decided to eat Asian food. When we got there it was very loud and packed(but for good reason) but had to wait for a table still. We had to wait at a very inconvenient spot but when we finally got a table and ordered, the entre and drinks were strange but delicious(especially the coconut drink). The odd thing was is they gave my boyfriends meal first and waited til he was done to give me mine, but when we got the food it was better then the entre. Long story short: A+ for food, about a A– for service so worth going to

Have often come here for lunch when I want to get out of the office. Its pretty good prices, generally you can get a full meal for $ 10 but the service isn’t anything special. As there are many Asian restaurants in Box Hill I have found each have their own special dish. For me at Tien Dat its the Lemongrass dishes, they always seem to be tasty and consistent. The menu style is quite set traditional Vietnamese & Chinese. They are often quite busy(although I have never had to book) and as such do not do special orders. Sometimes your meals will come out at different times but that can be looked passed due to the price. Its somewhere I would come with a group of casual friends, but not to impress someone. No split bills can make it a little difficult sometimes but it always works out ok — just make sure you bring cash. Its a place I will keep coming back to, but nothing extraordinary just the same.

Came here for lunch. The spring rolls and rice paper Rolls where good. Great filling and had traditional mints. Rice paper Rolls didn’t come with plum/hoi sin sauce! Had the crispy skinned chicken which was way too crispy and meat was dry. And colleague had special broken rice however pork chops was average without flavor. Both dishes didn’t come with complimentary soup. Average at best but not the worst in melbourne. Does not compre to food from Cabramatta.

I’ve been going here for probably twenty years, and I just love this place. While there are some really, really awesome restaurants in the immediate vicinity, this is one place I keep coming back to. I almost always order a red beef curry. It’s sweet, a little bit spicy and the meat is tender. It’s one of my favourite meals to have. The green chicken curry is delicious too, but the chicken itself tends to be pretty awful. Service is pretty standard Asian restaurant. It can take awhile to get a waiter’s attention. Largely because it’s so busy, in my experience. I seriously love this place.

Located in Box Hill, Tien Dat is one of Melbourne’s best Vietnamese restaurants. You will need to book as they tend to get very full very quick, and even with a reservation chances are you will spend time waiting. You will be happy to know it is worth the wait. The service may be lacking(they are very focused on fast turnover), but the food is great. The rice paper rolls, pork and prawn or just pork are served with a homemade dipping sauce and are delicious. They have a very varied menu, I personally have tried and loved the red beef curry, the Singapore noodles(the best I have had). The green chicken curry I had mixed feelings about. The sauce was the best green curry sauce ever, but I was disappointed with the quality of the chicken. Lots of joints and sinewy bits. Having said that, I probably would buy it again for the sauce and just push the chicken aside.
