When I was studying abroad at Curtin I used to go to the Tav ALLTHETIME! The best part was the parties — I LOVED the halloween party, I’m pretty sure there was a luau party, and really everything else about the bar. It’s a very laid back place and the staff was always super nice.

The Curtin Tav is a well-appointed tavern in the heart of Curtin Uni. There’s a generous amount of seating both inside and out, and they do decent pub food at fair prices. Their selection of beer is limited to low quality beers, but I suppose that is to keep the prices down. The Curtin Tav holds the Curtin heats of the National Campus Band competitions. As a performance space, the outside holds a decent amount of people and the PA is of a good quality. Overall, Curtin Tav is a decent place for students to congregate after a hard day’s studying, or to whittle away time between classes.

Although I don’t go to Curtin Uni some of my friends do and on a few occasions I’ve come with them to some of their Tav parties. Think cheap drinks, pub food, loads of young friendly people, cool themes, games and awesome giveaways. The last party I went to was a cowboy themed one and they even had an awesome mechanical bull, the prize for the winner was a new Ipod so you can imagine the amount of people trying to get in. The atmosphere here is always laid back and friendly, but be sure to get there early if you want to get in or even get a table because this place gets packed really fast. If you’re more of the chilled out type their are pool tables towards the back and more comfortable and intimate seating but really the Tav is all about meeting new people and having fun.

Love it! I first encountered this tav many moons ago. Many moons ago when I was young and impressionable and it was a novelty to get in to an alcohol serving area. The days of the Wednesday nighters, boys with blue hair and bright nails and an endless stream of 18th birthday parties. Good times. As was the tav. I remember well the old-style gaming machines sparked my interest as I perused possible boy prospects in this alluring drinking arena. This was in the days before the term retro was mainstream and commercialised. I simply thought the Pac Man games were cool, and they were. Back then, I never ordered any food at the Curtin Tav, which really was a sign of the times. I have since ordered some delectable dinners there and I must say, go for the wedges. Crisp on the outside. Tender on the inside. Delectable all round. You really can’t go too far wrong. I still love the atmosphere here and think the wooden barrel tables are the epitome of cool. It’s always a good atmosphere at the tav. and I reckon this is situational. How can it not be a good atmosphere when so many fun loving bohemians burst in for a beer on a daily basis?

I can absolutely guarantee that I have spent more time at the Tav than in all of my lectures and tutorials combined during my years at uni. Sure this is a reflection of my lack of commitment as a student but more so how awesome the Tav is. The food is amazing, highlights being the chicken parm and any of the pizzas, the booze is cheap and the dudes who work there are ladsy. Wednesday and Friday nights during semester are the time to go for food and drink deals, which draw in the crowds. There are often good local bands playing as well, and annual events such as the beach party which is a cant miss. One of the best pubs in all of Perth and a brilliant place to get in touch with your uni days.

The Curtin tav is a popular spot for a hearty meal and packs out at lunch times during semester. I often found myself hovering around, waiting for a group to vacate their table so I could mark my spot with a stack of uni books. If you get down by 11:30 though you should be able to sit yourself on one of the tables in the casually cheerful beer garden, which is great in on sunny days. To be perfectly honest, I think I had one alcohlic beverage at the tav, the entire 3.5 years I was a student at Curtin. I just didn’t really see the point as I needed my concentration for; A) lectures and B) driving. I did however make it known just how much I loved their pub-style eats. One of my friends couldn’t get enough of their famously tasty, beer-battered wedges. I think she ordered a bowl for lunch just about every day we were on campus and I was more than willing to help her finnish them.

I love the Tav. Even if I wasn’t a uni student, I would love the Tav. The food is great, I mean it’s not the best pub food but it does the absolute trick. AND! it’s cheap. Blammo! Done, I’m sold. And if you’re a guild member, its cheaper. The drinks menu is extensive and because it caters for uni students, they are not overly expensive. They’re cheap-average priced. Boom, done. The bar staff are really cool and have a laid back vibe. I mean, you don’t get your food brought out to you, and you have to go collect it but oh man, is it worth it. The guild throws awesome parties on Wednesday nights and apparently Friday nights go off at the Tav. But I am a fan of a chilled bevvy on a hot day whilst your in between classes. And it’s not just for uni students. Anyone can come join in the fun of the tav because at Curtin university, we don’t discriminate. I love sitting outside under the shade of the umbrellas but on those scorchers I’ve picked my spot right underneath the air-con sitting on a bar stool around a barrel, which doubles as a table. Cool, right?
