I have worked with elderly people for over 15 years, all the while finding new ways to enhance their experiences — especially in aged care facilities. My mother went into aged care 12 years ago. I was shocked to notice that she and the other residents just sat in a room without any meaning or familiarity to them, and without any activities to engage them. That is how the thought developed into the production of reminiscing boards.
I piloted the use of these boards in the last facility I worked in, and was overwhelmed by their success. The boards create an environment that is instantly familiar to residents. The clock is turned back for them. Such an experience is of crucial importance for wellbeing, especially in dementia wards.
