We stopped in here for some drinks and a meal before heading over the road to the comedy club. They appear to have a happy hour, because the second round of drinks became far more expensive. I was driving so just on the soft drinks, so this didn’t bother me too much. Once the kitchen opened we headed to the dining area and were quickly given a table where we checked out the extensive menu. I had the steak, and it was much better than expected. I have to admit, I haven’t had a steak that tender in quite a while. Very much enjoyed it. They got one of our orders wrong, but quickly brought out the right meal(a salad, so didn’t take too long), and threw in a free glass of wine to make up for it. You know, I think I might come back.

Sometimes I like to wander out of the city centre to check out some of the suburban areas because you can find some really interesting things there. I guess I’m not your typical tourist — more like a traveller — which I why I managed to find this place. Okay, thanks to the internet I already knew that this place existed and decided that I would add this to the collection of pubs that I am attempting to visit. Anyway, this was a pretty decent pub, though it does come with the stock standard sports bar and pokies room. However you don’t have to go down there because there is a pretty cool bar at the other end of the pub with some pretty decent beer gardens. One of the beer gardens has half of it set aside as the designated smoking area so you can’t eat anything there, but then there is another beer garden around the side where you don’t have to put up with smokers. Oh, they also have a huge selection of spirits behind the bar, as well as a decent selection of craft beers on tap.

Being a local, I have eaten at the Albion Hotel on numerous occasions and I can’t say its anything to write home about. Mediocre pub food at restaurant prices most succinctly sums up the dining portion of the establishment. As for the bar, I would recommend giving the sports bar a miss, unless you enjoy dank and depressing environments. The outside area at the back is nice on a Sunday afternoon with a cold Coopers, my only criticisms would be the annoying pump in the water feature constantly spluttering, and the sound from the Sunday live music act could be turned down juuuust a touch as it is near impossible to have a conversation during sets. Not a terrible pub by a long shot but I wouldn’t recommend eating here, Albion has plenty of other awesome options literally right next door!

Loved the atmosphere, the friendly staff and the food! As I stood on the hot Albion pavement and tentatively pushed open the dark tinted glass door to escape the 31 degree heat, I wasn’t sure what I’d find. Oh! Here’s where everyone had come to escape… into the cool, dark Cucina Italian Restaurant and Bar, extending out from the older style public bar on the corner, through comfortable lounge areas with big heavy wooden furniture, to the courtyard where we found ourselves, cheating the heat under a big tree next to a pleasant water feature. The wine was good, the spicy lamb pizza with haloumi and yoghurt was great and so were the yummy sides. Our table attendant was really helpful, custom building a mocktail for the lady at the table next to us and bringing our food and drinks in surprisingly quick time with a big smile.

My general impression of the Albion Hotel, is that it is a classy place to take the in-laws when they visit from NSW. Gives them a taste of ‘the big city’ while still comfortable enough to remind them on the up-market taverns at home. Usually though, if I am going out for dinner I either want cheap and take away or romantic fine dining with my partner. I don’t generally go in-between but this is a good place to go for that. The meals are great price-wise and the atmosphere is nice, you get a range of people about the place. The cheese cake is also really good if you have a sweet tooth.

Without having seen the old Albion Hotel, it’s plain to see that a subdued and classic approach has been taken with the renovations. From the stone walls and water features in the alfresco area to the elegant chandeliers, marbled bar and minimalist formal dining settings on the inside– everything about the new Albion works to lure in the yuppy, boutique, wealthy crowd. Not surprisingly though, you will still find stalwart bar flies in and around the bar. I remember when I first came here. I wasn’t allowed in wearing thongs. I sauntered back home and dressed more appropriately. I originally went there to drink cheap jugs, but upon seeing the opulent surrounds, I withdrew enough money to sit on Frangelico based cocktails all night. The whole experience was sublime. Your night at the Albion doesn’t have to be fancy. You can go for a humble brew and steak. You’ll just pay more for it because the pub is determined to push the idea that the new Albion is a classy joint. Cocktails and fine dining aren’t usually my kind of thing, but there is an element to the new Albion that almost arrests your desire to go down to the pub dirty and spent for a pint of New. You’ll find yourself doing odd things like showering and putting on nice clothes before going to the pub. The new Albion’s makeover will end up giving you a makeover you never expected.

The Albion Hotel is one of those commercial kind of bars that older people go to. It’s got the restaurant with pub food, the DOSA area and the all-important gambling zone. For a place for younger people to come and have a drink at its probably not the most encapsulating place to go. As for food that’s another story. From the outside, The Albion Hotel looks pretty impressive and the dining menu at night sees a lot of people coming to its kitchen for a quality meal. Because I’m here at lunch I’m deciding on a their burger that comes with thick cut chips and a special beef patty with secret spices. When it comes out, I need to recheck the menu and confirm that the kitchen has forgotten the bacon in my burger. I send it back and its returned in a couple of minutes with extra chips. The burger isn’t too bad but there is something about the special spices that make it something I most likely will be ordering again.
