Come here at night, day time is boring. I had a creepy taxi driver who tried to stop here with me once, I did know him but still, it was weird. At least the view was good, just come in your own car with your partner and a bottle of wine(not condoning drink driving). It’s really just a set of twinkly lights, but its pretty, the Windy Point restaurant is there too, but you need to make a booking.

Windy Point is really very windy. Always. Well, at least a place that truly deserves its name. The view you get over Adelaide is pretty good but apart from a quick photo stop there isn’t much to do. You can’t go for a long walk or anything because it’s basically just a parking spot off a main and curvy road. If you want a nicer setting, I’d recommend going to Mt Lofty Summit where you can get pretty much the same views(from a bit further away though) but have the opportunity to go for a walk or have a drink.

The location is about as whimsical as its name. Whatever image is brought to your mind at the sound is likely an accurate one. The view’s fantastic, whether experienced at night or day. Although the bridge between the two, sunset and sunrise, is easily the best time to schedule a visit. But people have a tendency to ruin beautiful things, don’t they? I’ve been unlucky. I can’t recall a single time I’ve come to Windy Point without some strangers — whether drunk or drugged-up or merely moronic — turning the memory sour for me. The climax came just when I was driving past. I had no intention, on this particular outing, to even pull into the lookout. But as I drove around that sharp bend, another car came screaming around the corner, speeding along the wrong lane, and dragged me into a head-on collision. It turns out the other driver was trying to overtake the car in front of him… around a blind corner. After that I decided I’m meant to stay away from Windy Point. I don’t know why, but the universe doesn’t even want me to get close to the place.

Windy Point Lookout is a must for any visiting tourists in Adelaide. The view from up here gives you a great perspective on the layout of the city and directions of important or interesting locations in the city. I go here whenever a foreign friend is visiting and occasionally just with mates to eat lunch or shoot the breeze. I’d recommend day-time as the best time to visit because you get a decent view of the hills to the south, which you generally lose in the night. If you manage to catch an Adelaide sunset from up here, the memory will likely burn itself into your brain. However, sometimes Windy Point can be a bit seedy. Some folks come up to the Point to get on the booze and smoke and leave garbage lying around the place, kind of spoiling the ambience. If you arrive late at night, you’ll probably spot a car or two rocking unambiguously too, which is always awkward to park next to.

This is my fave lookout in Adelaide. That may be due to the fact I grew up in the Adelaide foothills and there was many a drive to Windy Point for various reasons: the awesome views, sheer boredom, kissy-wissy time, to go all Bob Marley on the smokey time, to disrupt other patrons from their sordid activities(are we sensing a theme here?), just to get out the house, to watch and hear some nice cars go round that insane bend and on and on. One of my best friends got enagaged up there, wearing her tracky-dacks(hey it was a surprise). Oh the memories. In a nutshell — go look!

During my teens years in Malaysia, there was a popular Lookout cum lovers spot on a hill called Gasing Hill. To kill time, my friends and I would take our torch lights and tap on self appointed car windows and shout, ’ Hi, is my brother in there?’ or ’ Hide, I just saw your father around the corner!’ Ah, it brings back such fond memories. Whenever I drive to Windy Point in Belair, I relieve those moments. No, I do not tap on people’s windows nor have I lost my marbles. I just smile knowing what fun and havoc I used to cause back then. I still do… NOT! So, I bring my kids here often as the view is spectacular at night. Like flickering candles settling in a field of midnight charcoal, it is truly a peaceful sight to behold. With a panoramic view of Adelaide Plains, you can even spot the lights at Port Adelaide. well if you look closely. Come here during the day, and set your eyes on the blue seas, greenery and note the hustle and bustle of traffic beneath you. There are a couple of benches or pick a spot on the stone walls and wave at cars snaking up and down the curvy roads. Take the steps going up to the nearby Windy Point Restaurant and Café and you can catch a better view of the overall landscape and area. Perfect for the family, ideal for a quick lunch stop before you make your way into the hills, plus it cost nothing. Alternatively, bring a torch light and do ya thing!
