My first ever squash game was here. A friend of mine and I’d always wanted to have a go, but had never found the motivation. One day finally, and out of the blue, my friend organised us to go down there, and down there we went. Speaking of ‘down there’, I’d considered wearing a cup or a box to protect my genitalia. I thought it might be a little paranoid or silly, however. Indeed, my friends had already given my enough grief for refusing to play paintball without a cup. Anyway, so we’re playing. We’d hired rackets(very cheap) and a court(less cheap, but still cheap) and were trying to wrap our heads around the rules. It was only six minutes or so in when my friend’s extremely capable shot rebounded off the wall and went straight into my crotch. My future children and I are happy to inform you I’d decided to go with the cup.

Norwood squash gets an extra star just for its distinctive design on the front wall. A sport typically associated as a passtime of stressed out suits, squash is not as glamorous as tennis and not as domestic as ping pong. Two people are shut in a small room and hit the hard ball to each other using the wall as an intermediary. It is fast paced and close, so it’s great for fitness and coordination. If you don’t have your own, rackets can be rented for $ 2 per half hour and court hire is $ 11.30 per half hour before 5pm and $ 13 after. The balls are different speeds, so beginners may want to opt for the ones with a blue dot as they play a little slower.
